Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Jul 2, 2013 19:26:36 GMT 1, I haven't previously seen much arabic graffiti and urban art mentioned on the forum, so I thought I'd share some of the work I like.
I've always thought that there's a clear parallel between graffiti and arabic art, insofar as that the letterform is the basis for both; with graffiti it comes back to the tag and with a lot of arabic art it's calligraphy. I think arabic calligraphy is beautiful and rhythmic but, perhaps with the exception of some of Dizm's tracksides in the late '90s, very few writers seem to have picked up on its potential. Anyway, here's a few artists I like...
Vincent Abadie Hafez aka Zepha - I think I've previously posted some of his work in the 'Artists You Might Not Know' thread but I love his merging of arabic and latin letters and the commentary about the relationship between arabic and european cultures.
Yazan - The translation of the title of the top piece is "Our Grandfathers invented the zero and their grandchildren became zeroes"
L'Atlas - Some people might have come across L'Atlas' work before. He's pushed his letter forms more and more towards geometric matters to the extent that his recent work looks more like Brigit Riley's but I prefer the older stuff like this.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Jul 2, 2013 21:33:50 GMT 1, Glad you guys are enjoying. There's some really interesting, beautiful and thoughtful work coming out of the Middle East, North Africa and France. I'll post some other artists who I'm into in the future.
how much does vincent's work go for? its nice! He had a show at the David Bloch gallery about 18 months ago and I seem to remember the pieces were all quite large (160cm x 140cm) and that they were about 3,000โฌ. He's just had another show at the same gallery but I don't know what the prices were like; it looked stunning and there's a bunch of photos here. I tried contacting him and a couple of other smaller, lower profile galleries where he's exhibited over the last few years to enquire about smaller pieces but never got any replies unfortunately.

There's an app for the iPhone where you can upload Arabic/eastern typography based images and its corresponding website looks promising; only just starting out. Am away from my phone and mac so can't remember the name of it though, deffo worth a look.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Jul 3, 2013 21:53:45 GMT 1, Very sad to see there's been a military coup in Egypt this evening.
If anyone is interested in helping to document the street art and graffiti since the revolution then there's crowdsourcing effort to help fund the remainder of the costs to get 'Walls of Freedom' published. Here's information about the project here and this video:
Thanks for the information about the 'Revolution Graffiti' book, Tristan. I'll check that out.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Trismanco on Jul 3, 2013 22:17:00 GMT 1, Thanks I hadn't heard of the "Walls of Freedom" book. It sounds like it will cover some similar ground as the Revolution Graffiti book just published which documents the graffiti explosion up to and after the revolution -
But "Walls of Freedom" seems to have plenty of voices involved, with lots of artists and essays... It's a really vital scene there right now - so the more books the better...
Also the crowd funding gifts look like they have gone to a lot of effort...

Maybe a thread for letterbased works is in order or calligraphic references. There are many that fit this style but are not arabic influenced. Such as
Defer and Big Sleeps
Aaron De la Cruz
Sowat

Fatbuddha - I never would have guessed that was Tizer's work, definitely not his usual style. Mohammed Ali/Aerosol Arabic has done a fair bit around the UK but I can't think of any others.
