Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Sept 11, 2013 19:10:11 GMT 1, Nadine Kanso's photography juxtaposes two sides of life in Beirut; the sectarian and political tensions symbolised by the corresponding graffiti and the carefree and hedonistic party life symbolised by the photos from clubs and bars.

Nice, I want to live between those concrete blocks, that looks cool. Better than a wee stained multi storey car park.

"'HYPERGRAPHIA: the overwhelming urge to write' at BC Gallery [in Berlin] is an art show dedicated to the power of the letter. Representing the whole spectrum of urban calligraphy, HYPERGRAPHIA is spanning from New York style graffiti tags to Middle Eastern influenced calligraphy, also exhibiting official paperworks from Brazil's pixaรงรฃo movement, for the first time ever in a gallery. Curated by Maximiliano Ruiz. Opening night 19/09/13. Exhibition runs from 20/09/13 to 27/10/13"
Artists: Heiko Zahlmann (D) Max Rippon (US) Sowat (F) Stohead (D) Tilt (F) Vincent Abadie Hafez (F) Os+Fortes (BR)"
A few things seem to have got slightly lost in translation but it looks like a great show for anyone in Berlin over the next month or so.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Trismanco on Sept 14, 2013 12:37:17 GMT 1, My fave thread at the moment... lovely selection of artists...
To be a little pedantic however, let's not forget that pretty much all classic "Graffiti" art has its roots in the letterform... even though today graffiti has moved into many directions...
I like the way the thread moves from Calligraphy to Hand-styles to different alphabets - so its all good stuff...

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Sept 17, 2013 18:48:05 GMT 1, A few things that have caught me eye lately...
The work of French writer Demon:
A recent interview with eL Seed on Complex.com:
"On September 5, Leila Heller Gallery opened "Calligraffiti 1984/2013," an updated version of the original 1984 exhibition with the help of Jeffrey Deitch. Of the artist eL Seed, who contributes two pieces to the show, Deitch told the New York Times, โHe is in a very genuine way working in this fusion between a calligraphic technique coming out of Arabic script and an awareness of international graffiti language. When we did the show originally in 1984, there wasnโt anyone like this. [Now] there is this actual fusion of the two traditions.โ Full interview here.
And a recent piece by Reso in Ramallah in the West Bank:

You are, of course, absolutely right! I would say that 'no one likes a pedant' but I didn't want to post the below artists work in the Arabic Graffiti thread on the basis that I think her work is predominantly based on farsi, rather than arabic, and she's never been a writer. Those in glasshouses and all that!

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Coach on Sept 17, 2013 22:27:25 GMT 1, BTW, if anyone is fond of the gothic writing, and likes really (really!) old stuff, I am selling some of my collection of medieval manuscripts - all hand written - most mid 1400's. Soon to be selling lots of stuff in fact - as soon as I can bring myself to start the thread. :-(

Funniest of all, few years later the Americans got their great American nude; do you remember the first picture of Sadam published on the mag ??

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Sept 18, 2013 18:03:19 GMT 1, I'm glad eL Seed is getting more and more recognition. It seems to be opening up a lot of opportunities for him, which can only be a good thing.
Thanks for the link to Zepha's last show. If I haven't said it before, I'd love to see photos of your Zepha piece when it arrives and you get it up on the wall. There's a smaller (66cmx85cm) mixed media on paper piece here by Zepha. It's one of my favourite pieces by him but sadly I won't be in a position to buy anything anytime soon. I hope it finds a good home though.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Gard on Sept 18, 2013 18:55:24 GMT 1, I haven't bought anything yet, but maybe next week. I saw the above work in Zephas facebook feed, it's really good. Don't understand why he releases it on a furniture website though.. This is almost the same price as the new Invader kit so if you missed that one, but still want something, this is the one to go for
I saw a youtube film last week where they had interviewed an expert on arabic art. One of the things she said I really liked. -Even if you don't understand what it says, it can be seen as a beautiful piece of abstract art.
