Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Apr 29, 2014 22:14:55 GMT 1, There are photos of Vincent Abadie Hafez's stunning new mural in Tarifa in Andalusia entitled 'Rosa de los vientos (Rose Compass)' on his website here. The detail is beautiful and well worth checking out but here's a context shot from his website; the piece to the left is by Axel Void and the piece to the right is by El Niรฑo de las Pinturas:

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on May 6, 2014 17:44:37 GMT 1, l'Atlas returns to New York for a show at the Catherine Ahnell Gallery entitled '[space]' from 15 May to 22 June. Here's a couple of pictures of the show print which is currently being produced at Idem Paris:
Also, l'Atlas has a whole bunch of timelapse videos of him producing his larger installation work on his Vimeo page. I've only posted a couple below to avoid spamming this thread but the rest can be found here.
Lastly, here's a great video of French digital artist Miguel Chevalier's latest installation at รglise du Sacrรฉ-Cลur in Casablanca:

Technique wise it's basically monoprinting but using wood type as the printing surface. So all the marks and overlaying of colours are applied by hand to the blocks akin to a painting.
I'm constantly messing around, refining and combining different techniques but the problem is I get bored too quickly so once I've done one or two prints in one style I'll give in and move onto something else.

He's currently got a show at David Bloch in Marrakesh entitled '[Horizontal]' which runs through until 10 June.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Jun 5, 2014 9:07:48 GMT 1, OK, so none of the below have anything to do with graffiti or street art but who cares.
Youssef Abdelke Abdelke recently had exhibitions in both Paris and Beirut including the work below. Of the three artists I mentioned in my previous post about Syrian art I think Abdelke is the only one still living in Syria, which I think is incredibly brave and noble considering he was a political prisoner for two years under Hafez al-Assad and was again imprisoned last year by Bashar al-Assad. I think it's genuinely important that there are people like Abdelke documenting what's happening to ordinary people in Syria in a way that photojournalist perhaps can't and communicating it to the rest of the world.
Sara Shamma Shamma has a small show at the Royal College of Art towards the end of last year including a 16.5 metre long canvas, but I think this was my favourite piece. The show was about the changes and behaviour of people at war and under threat, rather than the political side of the situation.
Khaled Akil Akil is based in Aleppo and his work is towards the fine art end of the photographic spectrum but his portraits beautifully capture the soul and character of his subjects. This piece is from a recent exhibition in Turkey.

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Shoeless on Jun 16, 2014 8:44:30 GMT 1, As much as I liked the first Cryptik mandala, I decided not to pick one up because it seemed he reuses images. Appears I was correct. Not a fan of that business model. Discredits the 'limited' factor in my opinion. A shame as I think he could create so much more.
Ordered the Zepha from 1xRun. Waiting for it to arrive. Looking forward to it!

(L-R) Mantra Mandela I - The Jewel In The Lotus - The Jewel In The Lotus (Gold Leaf)
I think even at a quick glance it is obvious to most that none of them are the same... much less the two releases next week are most likely not even from the same screens at all.
You might take more than a simple glance at beautiful pieces of art by an extremely talented artist before you discount something to your eye is being exactly the same. Please do not go for this release if you do not like it, but be educated when you take a stand.
He is not just an artist he is trying to start a movement (you might want to read it in his "about" section). I think he is off to a great start.

At quick glance, they are the same. Upon further study, a slight difference can be seen. I stand by my point though. The images are too similar.
Not educated on the artist? Hardly. I think what the artist is doing is great! He has talent and respectable values. I contacted him about a commission piece as well....though decided against it.
Personally, I am not a fan of......rehashing images. It seems lazy to me. He has open editions which fit that model better. Again, just my opinion and not an attack on the artist or the quality of work. No need to take offense.
Best

Calligraphy Calligraffiti Art, by Feral Things on Jul 24, 2014 21:20:30 GMT 1, I know it's not street art or graffiti, but the New Museum in New York are currently showing an exhibition entitled 'Here and Elsewhere' which features 45 artists from across 15 countries including Wafa Hourani who is a Palestinian artist based in Ramallah.ย The piece below shows a futuristic version of the Qalandia refugee camp:
Further details here.
And on even more of an aside, if anyone hasn't read a graphic novel by Joe Sacco entitled 'Palestine', which depicts the everyday realities for ordinary Palestinians, then I would highly recommend it.ย It's been a long time since I last read it but I was sadly reminded of the excellent book by today's latest shelling of a UN-school in Gaza.
