Kaws Brooklyn Museum Print, by touchdowntodd on Feb 26, 2019 20:28:00 GMT 1, I think this is a great conversation and comparison of our collective views of what makes what in the art world..
the most interesting aspect to this to me is that no one has bothered to point out how genius of a move it is on Brian's behalf because he gets to literally write off the sold value of all of them off on his taxes..
he totally outdid Jonas in this manner in that the organization Jonas had everyone donate to his politically based so therefore not a deductible donation.

Everything Brian does is really for his own benefit. It's a nice gesture sure, but he wouldn't do anything to damage his market. Maybe releasing these was a calculated move on his end to push previous entry level prints upwards and using these to do so. Man is a marketing genius and a business through and through.

Hmmmm... Unsure I can totally agree on that. Honestly I think he could've handled himself better the last few years, and controlled the hype vs actual love for art... Also done less and therefore more with vinyl
But can't be mad he's making his kids rich.. let's just not all forget how much art he's buying from others lol. This is all a game plan
And also a very reason many people I know walked away from collecting his work.. this mini print was maybe the only thing I'd ever personally buy from him again had I had a chance at one. I'd never pay current retail for prints, buy vinyl, buy t-shirts, etc... There's a fine line being walked that could effect his future, and not everyone is blind to it
I hope he's famous forever, and somehow regains the innovation some feel he's lost with the last couple releases and commissions that were publicly shown at least.. but anything can happen these days
He's got great taste in young new talent tho.. I'm a huge fan and collect myself 3-4 artists he's bought in very large chunks

Kaws Brooklyn Museum Print, by Inknart on Feb 26, 2019 21:38:16 GMT 1, There are screenprints that are machine produced. In my opinion this is how I see the difference in the two: Handmade means that a human constructed the artwork from initiation to completion. Handfinished means that a human added finishing touches to the artwork. So you are saying that Kaws cut all these out by hand then? Literally, with his finger nails. His DNA is embedded in each one #KLAWS

Me too. I just donโt see the need for prices to be talked up or down. The ones Iโve seen do look like lovely things. Genius idea to make small prints from rejects. Aesthetically they are rather pleasing; typical crisp and colourful images. But all the arguments about what they are worth 5 minutes after release!

Kaws Brooklyn Museum Print, by Express Post on Feb 27, 2019 0:38:48 GMT 1, Last time I enquired all spoken for. Last year, each of the Singapore, HK, and US menswear stores forwarded a list of clients for consideration. Corporate Paris would then select the buyers from the list. So not as easy as walking in with cash, because I know many that had the means but not the access. Plus you needed a buying history, which a lot of folks didn't.

The ones Iโve seen do look like lovely things. Genius idea to make small prints from rejects. Aesthetically they are rather pleasing; typical crisp and colourful images. But all the arguments about what they are worth 5 minutes after release! I get it. It can get exhausting and boring in itโs predictability. My thoughts ... price is quickly introduced because some people (myself included) would still like to purchase this print. Of course Iโd have preferred to pay the original price but I missed the chance. There is an unfortunate need, imo, to openly discussing secondary value inclusive of the typical โhavesโ talking it up to โXโ amount, the โhave notsโ talking it down to โXโ amount, and having the failed shill eBay bids as a reference point (we canโt wish these current realities away). Without the discussion and dispute we get trapped in a bit of a confirmation bias situation and give up seeking facts in place of taking someoneโs word.
Itโs just part of the process of finding the truest value of something so someone doesnโt end up getting fleeced by paying thousands more based on misinformation or โhypeโ . Personally I think the more data the better in making informed purchasing decisions on the secondary.

Kaws Brooklyn Museum Print, by Express Post on Feb 27, 2019 3:04:34 GMT 1, Reading this made me realise that connoisseurship is the only way to be ahead of the curve. Once things heat up, or become sure things, it becomes competitive.
I remember when you were guaranteed a black Kawsbob for $1200 by signing up for the $100 membership. These were available for a week. Or the Harland Miller TIWIFA ยฃ3600 Inc VAT and Too Cool to Lose ยฃ900 Inc VAT. Both sat for months. Or the Mario Testino Kate Moss photograph from Boston for $1350 with discount. Those sat for days too.
There are gems out there without the heat of the competition. You just have to know where to look.
Comparing JW and KAWS is silly. KAWS has a much bigger fanbase. Would folks pay 5k for a piece of a Warhol/Basquiat print that the artist intented to be cut, then stamped and signed them? I am willing to say yes collectors would pay 5k. The musuem has confirmed that there was 250 prints created for those who donated. Not comparing fan base... Comparing pricing of pieces and "value" And 250 my ass lol. One guy bought over 20 himself lol

Totally.. all about new or undervalued ..
Even with Kaws, you could've bought like 2 years ago semi decently. People pretend this rush of late has been going for longer, but it hasn't. I bought my PTP back then for barely over 5k with shipping (i had sold off the last off a few things from another hobby and I rolled the dice). it sat on this forum a while. Retail being 3.5, that's a great price I thought at the time.. fast forward 2 years, and people think they're worth $20k (I don't agree with that personally, I'd think 10 tops but not selling so who cares) .. it's a crap shoot. Could be 3k in 10 years? Who knows.. could be more, could be worthless..
I say, don't buy on tides, buy what you like, and keep it affordable.. that's the only plan that matters

Just different perspectives I'm honestly really happy for those that bought and are keeping. Me too. I just donโt see the need for prices to be talked up or down. The ones Iโve seen do look like lovely things. Genius idea to make small prints from rejects. Aesthetically they are rather pleasing; typical crisp and colourful images. But all the arguments about what they are worth 5 minutes after release! Agreed, the talk is either about the potential value of these if Kaws coughed on any of them, followed by the armchair conversation that follows each Kaws release questioning his career choices.

For the plebs like myself, by the time everyone here is hyping an artist the ship has already sailed for my budget. Sure, I may be able to time it perfectly and score a drop like the JW Vote, but for the most part it's too late for those of us without stacks of cash to become collectors. They're a total nobody until all of the sudden they're not.
The good news is that for every Oli Epp, there are 20 artists who make art I'd be happy to put on my walls for a fraction of the price and hassle. Which is no knock on Oli, there's a certain intangible "something" that clicks for some and then all of the sudden their market is a rocket to the moon.
Earlier this week I went by SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) for their annual art sale. The school does a good job of promoting and representing their students and graduates, essentially acting as a gallery to the general public. I was blown away by the numerous artists producing work that could hang side by side with a lot of the up and coming names that are discussed here. There was something for every price range, and no shortage of talent.
For those interested, here's a link to SCAD's gallery page: SCAD Art Sales

Comparing pricing of pieces and "value" And 250 my ass lol. One guy bought over 20 himself lol This is pretty spot on.

Kaws Brooklyn Museum Print, by aumi on Feb 27, 2019 15:51:46 GMT 1, Why do people keep saying they're "Hand Finished"? They're not, are they? If a signature is now classified as hand finished The weird thing is it says so in the letter from the Brooklyn Museum:
"The handmade, unique print..."

Jesus Iโve explained this once already!! Hand made because they are hand cut!!
If you take a big print and cut a circle out, itโs hand made!!
Now move along
