They could be marks where the rest of the print has faded from the light, but the covered bit retained the original colour. However that would mean the signature would have been covered aswell?

You win, correct on all counts. Inside print faded from cheap frame. Signature was covered by mount because in 2006 it didn’t matter much. It was some sort of tar on the outside, the black stayed the same colour, didn’t fade at all.
As far as the chips in the black I can’t say I notice them until it was mentioned. The buyer wasnt bothered or can’t have seen them.
I did drop the price by 15% of the going rate for the fading.
