The thing to remember is that flipping has been frowned upon on this site for as long as Iโve been a member. Iโve given up expressing my views on it, as it seems that it has become more acceptable here these days, for reasons unknown to me. But there are still those that feel strongly about it, and I wonder why they shouldnโt express those views.

I think if people flip, they should add some value to what they do @coach, like maybe a weekend away for 2 or 6 months movie vouchers dependent on their profit potential
I.e by for ยฃ1k and want 2.5k then they offer a weekend for 2 in Prague, 4 star hotel, return flights and transfers etc
added value, that's what i want and expect from now on
i think we all should

I was planning not to comment again, as I didnโt particularly want to get involved in another debate about flipping (my earlier comment was in reference only to whether people should feel able to criticise flipping or not). However your comment does make me wonder if people are talking at cross purposes. Selling something for more than it was bought for is not necessarily flipping - certainly not as I have understood it when discussed here. And of course I wouldnโt expect that anyone would sell a Banksy (to take your example) that has increased in value for what they bought it for.

Oh Iโm speaking of back when Banksy was offering prints such as Choose Your Weapon and even earlier- thatโs just my most recent memory.
This is a genuine question. At what point do you consider selling a print for profit- kept in mint condition and never framed- to not be a flip?

Hope you dont mind me butting in?
1 month for me
For me a flip is something I want but someone beat me to it, then within a month is selling it. sometimes within an hour.
They dont give a shit about the print, the art, the artist, they just want the profit, I don't blame them, its an easy tax free way to make money. I certainly wouldn't feed them though, I would rather do without the artwork

To my mind, it is all about intention when buying, not timescale. If you buy with the sole intention to sell for a profit, itโs flipping, as itโs depriving a genuine fan from getting the work and profiting from the creativity of the artist. It happens to be that this usually means selling on quickly. You might buy art because you love it, enjoy it, and then sell for current value and a profit. That isnโt flipping in my mind. I donโt think anyone should sell the art they have collected for less than current value. But all of this is just my opinion, and I accept that itโs probably a minority view nowadays. I only spoke out about someone being free to criticise.

FS: Kaws Brooklyn Print, by 19818914 on Mar 5, 2019 22:49:13 GMT 1, So letโs say itโs the month of February. A print releases Feb 1 and someone lists a print on the 28th and another lists a print on March 1. Ones a flipper. The other isnโt? Itโs really difficult to define. At the end of the day itโs a piece of paper with some ink and sometimes a signature to go along with an edition number. It doesnโt have to flip. But some people want to pay more than retail for it so it does.

At what point do you consider selling a print for profit- kept in mint condition and never framed- to not be a flip? I think "Flipping" is more of a time reference from release to sale. If someone holds something for 6 months and then throws it up for sale it's looked at as market value.
I think someone like Pejac, who's prices quadruple overnight are the most cringe worthy because he will have another print at the same price at some point.
If someone offered me the V2 Sale Ends Banksy for 10k I would have snapped it up and considered it a deal and not a flip. Similar to this piece, it's obviously a nice gesture by the artist that may or may not happen again. It's more about the pricing on this piece rather than the timing at the current moment.

They dont give as**t about the print, the art, the artist, they just want the profit, I don't blame them, its an easy tax free way to make money. I certainly wouldn't feed them though, I would rather do without the artwork receiving income is not tax free, you must report it.
the term flipping is like "selling out" for punk music back in the day. It's really meaningless and makes no sense.
Mom+Pop stores and Walmart buys toilet paper for $1, Walmart sells for $2.50, Mom+Pop sells for $5. On this board, Mom+Pop store is a flipper, especially because they "sold it right away". They don't care about the Toilet paper. Walmart is more acceptable because they had to pay the bills. Also, if that Walmart sells a Banksy from a few years ago at x5,000 price, also totally fine. No rhyme or reason.
If you don't like a sale thread, just move on.
Anyway, one down...one left, but considering selling one of the other two.
1 month for me For me a flip is something I want but someone beat me to it, then within a month is selling it. sometimes within an hour. They dont give as**t about the print, the art, the artist, they just want the profit, I don't blame them, its an easy tax free way to make money. I certainly wouldn't feed them though, I would rather do without the artwork receiving income is not tax free, you must report it.

FS: Kaws Brooklyn Print, by That Print Guy on Mar 7, 2019 0:49:57 GMT 1, Ever since the opening on the forum in 2006 there has been hundreds of threads and wasted energy about 'flipping'. Hasn't solved nada. Keep going lads... Keep going.... gives us something to moan about and its good to moan I am getting real good at it as I get older bloody traffic I let out a moan occasionally if the flip is juicy enough. If I had been quick enough for these kaws I'd be moaning quite a bit.

I like how you compared yourself to a toilet paper (re)seller.

This is a genuine question. At what point do you consider selling a print for profit- kept in mint condition and never framed- to not be a flip?
Agreed. You articulated that well Coach.
