Career change - easier life ๐, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Mar 19, 2019 21:55:14 GMT 1, Anyone members quit their full time job to do something they have always wanted to do, or gone self employed and started own business?
I have been working full time and get paid well, but really not happy with work, stress and it takes itโs toll with wife and kids. Obviously still need the $ to pay the bills, but thinking of doing my own side hustles. Been reading on line lots of guys in 40โs doing this. Owning a successful gallery would be perfect, few on here have done this and Iโve always been envious, that takes a lot of cash to do though.
My main passion is football, so been thinking of getting all my coaching certificates then do some paid community coaching with kids and my own school holiday franchise. Little side hustle to this would be shipping football training equipment from China for online shop and amazon, eBay etc to get the extra cash in. Both these jobs will be my own time, less stress and great lifestyle๐
Any advice from people who quit their job and done the same?

Career change - easier life ๐, by rebate on Mar 19, 2019 22:03:01 GMT 1, 50/50 for me. Been a pain but its all my own gig so no one talking crap at me and expecting to be taken seriously. Has been less well paid and thinned the art collection a bit though.
If you want a gallery and hang out here, use the collection as stock. I started my self employed gig by using another previous collecting obsession as stock.
Think hard though, there is bugger all security if shit goes down.

Career change - easier life ๐, by .dappy on Mar 19, 2019 22:37:38 GMT 1, ... keep your existing job and start your import/sales business while you are still there ...
... yes you will be working harder, but you will doing it for yourself ... and it is easier to get support from your partner and family ...
... at least then you will realise if half of your new business venture is viable ...
... be expecting remarks: 'you fool' 'why would you do that' 'midlife crisis' etc ....
... you will need to build up at least six months (if not 12 months) money completely ring fenced in case things do not work out ... this is separate from your capital & operational cash ... and cash flow is everything ...
... you will need a business plan ... this is your base and blueprint ... it is what you can always return too to review each month and take a breath ... when things get a bit hectic ... and you feel in a bit of a muddle ...
... there will be risk and failure along the way ... but learn from it ... do not ignore or bury it ...
... include your other half completely and even talk it through what you are proposing with your children ... they will feel the tension, stress, rows and just wonder 'what daddy is doing' ...
GL in whatever you decide ... and always be honest with yourself ... so you can be honest with others

Agree with starting business when Iโm still full time, it will be a lot of work but safer option. My wife can help and be easier when my son starts school full time. Already started saving money, cut back on things and amazing how much money we save, also selling art to put toward the business goals.. cheers

Career change - easier life ๐, by longshanks on Mar 20, 2019 11:17:47 GMT 1, do it. It'll be the best thing you ever do. Yes, it can be stressful - the weight on your shoulders increases, but the reward of doing what you want is greater. Sure, you can earn more working for a giant firm, but there's more to life than money (so I keep telling myself). We spend an awful lot of our lives at work, so it's important you enjoy what you do. And if current setup is having a negative affect on family, then that's not good.

Career change - easier life ๐, by That Print Guy on Mar 20, 2019 12:40:48 GMT 1, One of the best things I ever did was take my hobby full time about ten years ago. Keep in mind that the better the business does the more you'll be doing the work to run a successful business vs. the actual thing that you wanted to be doing. But that's fun too! Owning the business is a job of it's own and it's all on you.

Career change - easier life ๐, by GMA on Mar 20, 2019 19:03:07 GMT 1, I went self employed 4 years ago and love it. I did it with a months worth of salary in my pocket, it was really risky though with a mortgage and new baby on the way but it wasn't working out in my perm job so had to do something. There are ups and downs but so far it's been the best decision I made. I get to work on different projects for big brands, some days I'm working on the UI for an app, other days I'm concepting campaign ideas. But when you do it, every invoice you get paid, wack 20% to the side for tax. 20% is more than enough and at the end of the year you get a nice little bonus.

Career change - easier life ๐, by Chris JL on Mar 20, 2019 19:49:52 GMT 1, My B plan for when I get fed up is to liquidate all assets (if any). Set up a B&B boutique hotel on a wildish part of costal Costa Rica (but on a hill). Mini restaurant with high brow cuisine with fresh local produce. Good cocktails at the bar. The kind of stuff I too would enjoy at the sundown. Remaining assets (if any) in a broad base market index for hedging. Buy a lot of sun screen. Met a former Goldman Sachs trade desk manager that did just that right before the financial crisis. He was as happy as a bug in a rug ...

Career change - easier life ๐, by maven on Mar 21, 2019 22:52:01 GMT 1, I went freelance 6 years ago. Best decision I ever made. No appraisals! I am my own boss. Now I'm also thinking I could set up a second business on the side using the profit from my business. I would like to set up a sculpture gallery...part indoor and part outdoor sculpture garden / sculpture trail or sculpture park. My only concern is that I don't think enough people buy sculptures to make it viable.

Good you changed though, you working less hours, less stress? ๐ lots less hours and a fair bit less money, but i dont care much. Mine is internet sales so open 24/7 no matter what i do. If i cant be arsed to add stock i go out instead. Sun comes out, i go out. Someone turns up with a better plan than work i go. i dont have to answer to anyone though, and past experience tells me id be getting my arse kicked if i did!
I love it, wages couldnt get me back working for anyone, id need to believe in it as a job rather than shuffling paper for no reason!

Career change - easier life ๐, by Deleted on Mar 22, 2019 12:50:57 GMT 1, Are you able to reduce your hours at work, giving you the opportunity and time to try other things? I used to work 12-hour shifts and couldn't unwind and slept really badly. I then arranged a zero hour contract and now I work only when I want to. Zero hour contracts get a lot of bad press but I love it. I have to be careful now about how much art I buy but I would never go back to working full time.

Career change - easier life ๐, by Dive Jedi on Mar 22, 2019 13:16:57 GMT 1, Anyone members quit their full time job to do something they have always wanted to do, or gone self employed and started own business? Both these jobs will be my own time, less stress and great lifestyle๐ Any advice from people who quit their job and done the same? I quit my rather well paid job over 2 years ago, because I wanted to photograph sharks. Working until 67 and then go diving did not seem like a good plan to me. Now I have zero regular income. Haven't regretted it for 1 second.
You do need a partner who's behind you 100%. Otherwise something will crash.
What many people don't realise is that you don't need to pay a lot of people to do stuff because you have the time to do it yourself. I paint my own house, instead of working 1 month to pay for a painter to do it in 3 daysโฆ.
Since you have some alternatives income that you enjoy, I say go for it. Keyword in "owning a succesful gallery" is "succesful". Which is quite a challenge. And can go wrong fast. Which will generate a lot more stress then you have now, I'm guessing
My opinion: Rather go for it and fail, then don't and regret it. Worst case scenario : you have to find a job again in 3 yearsโฆ. or sell your art.

Have enough savings for not feeling the clock in one or two years, have a B plan for worst scenario. Once done this, remember: at the end, regrets for what you didn't even tried are a lot sourer than the ones where you tried an failed.
Once I tasted not having a boss, I never was be able to go back. Good luck!

The people that give us shit all the time are just peanut butter and jealous because they're in some business building working for the man while I figured out a way to pay myself for being a professional shopping addict. The hours aren't bad either!

I love it but it is very demanding and the stress can get you down. I have a wife and 8 year old too so i have to put their needs first also. Whilst I do genuinely enjoy my job, I do think itโs healthy to have a plan B. For me, iโve really got back into photography,, documenting events, people and street. Occasionally I charge but itโs mostly for fun and experience where i can get it. Will it ever replace my day to day job? Who knows, but itโs great to have options if it ever does get too much.

My mate was an art director for large firm in Australia, I think the rejection of work would get me down, he use to say heโs do all the work then a hot chick with big tits (suits) would present to the client.. a few of his ideas came from meeting me and the boys in the pub, More creative after a few beers ๐ Yes, family always first and glad youโve got back into photography as another sideline, hopefully that take off for you also.

Certainly not trying to persuade you to not chase the dream however worth keeping in mind the other side of being self employed. Firstly itโs certainly not an easier life unless running a โlifestyleโ business. You have no idea where the next pay check is coming from, no paid holidays and canโt take a day off sick as otherwise you donโt earn. When you start to take on staff you have a whole new world of complications. You will find especially in the early years it will be all encompassing and youโll potentially be spending more hours on the venture than you ever did in work. The upsides are obvious as those above have confirmed.
I gave it a crack and it didnโt quite work out for me but glad I gave it a shot. I think a few have made the valid point that if achievable why not run the new venture along side to see how you get on.
Which ever way you turn good luck!
