Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by mushi on Mar 25, 2019 10:42:58 GMT 1, I own 2 originals on paper and both are wavy. This is probably due to paint and aquacolours used but is there a way to have a perfectly flat artwork ? I tried to put them between 2 sheets of acid free foam board and put heavy stuff on it. 2 months later, still wavy.
Also, what is the process of a piece being "professionally flattened" ?
As exemple, i picked some pics i found on the forum, i hope you don't mind Chicicarter.

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by Hubble Bubble on Mar 25, 2019 10:46:35 GMT 1, Much said about this on various threads. In my opinion it's the way the piece 'evolves' over time. Paper lives and breathes and changes shape along with atmospheric conditions. Professional flattening works but more than likely the issue will recur. Embrace the waves...

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by mushi on Mar 25, 2019 10:51:33 GMT 1, Yep, there is some threads about waves but only regarding float mounting, not much about painting and aquacolours.
Here is the most helpful post i found though :
Hi Ddog, I am sure there are many threads hidden in the depths of this forum discussing this matter. I believe I have contributed to them in the past. Let me try to help... The 'formation' of paper means it has a percentage of water in it. Over time, the formation changes due to heating and humidity meaning the paper will slightly expand and contract. This will lead to rippling. You must consider this when deciding how to frame a print as if it is floated and pulled very 'tight' it can lead to the paper to tear slightly. If too loose, it can ripple. This is very common amongst fine art prints. If the framer has used a lot of tabs to hold the print to the backing board this will also appear as rippling over time. It is hard to put this clearly into words but I hope this is of some help. If you are very concerned about your print, you can get it professionally flattened by someone like 'graham bignell' and then I would suggest getting it re-framed with a mount if the rippling will bother you.

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by erik on Mar 25, 2019 10:53:09 GMT 1, I remember owning one of these several years ago. Early in her career, she used paper that became very wavy. The website even sold several of them at a discount because of it. Itโs just the way they are, enjoy them

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by NYart on Mar 25, 2019 10:54:56 GMT 1, Considering the method of producing the piece also caused the waviness id let it be personally. Donโt think anyone would consider it damaged. That being said, if itโs just not appealing to you as is, be careful if you try to do too much to it you could end up causing the paint to crack.

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by mushi on Mar 25, 2019 10:55:36 GMT 1, I think this is a different matter here as the paper is new, there is no 'evolution'. Due to the water of the paint, even more with aquacolours, waves appears as soon as the paper dryed.

Wavy Original Artworks on Paper, by Happy Shopper on Mar 25, 2019 10:58:59 GMT 1, It's normal and totally fine.
(Just to clarify: paint and water make the paper wet, obviously, and both paint and paper contract as they dry. Normal)
