Screenprint Lanatoside B 2011 vs. Woodcut Isocytosine 2017 , by Bruggs on Apr 30, 2019 14:12:25 GMT 1, I have not posted a lot on here but have been on here for years. Looking for help making a decision on a purchase between two spot prints...
The battle is between a 2011 Lanatoside B and a 2017 Isocytosine. Pricing is similar, with the Lanatoside B being about 15% cheaper. Both are in perfect condition. They are similar in size. The Lanatoside B is a screenprint while the Isocytosine is a woodcut edition. What would be a major factors in value between the two prints in your opinion? What would be your opinion of woodcut vs. screenprint? I would love to see how others would think through this comparison.

Wood cuts can also show some very slight, like you have to look VERY close, representations of the wood block grain in some colors. I think it gives a really cool effect that you will only see if you know itโs there. All the woodcuts I believe also have deckled edges vs the screen prints are straight. I prefer deckle.
All comes down to personal preference at the end. Quality is going to be top notch on both. I donโt think there is a definitive โone is betterโ argument to be had. The differences are primarily textural and the colors will look great on both.

Should I buy a woodcut or a screen print?
I would respond: are you crazy? buy a woodcut.
When it comes to Hirst spot prints the answer is not as straight forward.
The screenprints look immaculate, the woodcuts look more earthy.
Ask youself - How should a spot print look?
I had this conversation with a gallery owner. (that had many of both)
I was told that rich uneducated clients go directly for the screenprints of these spots.
So if its about resale value we are talking here. Rich uneducated people is what you should consider.
This coversation I had, made me buy nothing even though I was also very close to buying a screenprint or a woodcut by Hirst.
I would say, go see them both, and choose for yourself.

But I would also add that I think the very symmetrical square format of the Lana' works better than the rectangular format of the '.
I would also presume that the earlier spot prints are more collectible than the more recent ones. He has churned out so many spot paintings that the later ones are simply him raking in the dosh. So a 2011 one is better, in my opinion, than a 2017 one.

Okay I am trying to sell one at the moment 
The glaze on the Lanatoside does give it an extra dimension, finish wise.
