I worked there during the late 78/81.. there was nothing, apart one or too. It’s not an area ( surely it has changed lol ) very popular : Hyde park in front of, and an area a bit “ cold “ with no shops, kind of living or working Victorian building .. Maybe my souvenirs are wrong. Anyway you have high Street Kensington not far away and his market, and in the other side, a bit far away by foot, the Hard Rock Cafe..

Royal Albert Hall, by Chris JL on May 8, 2019 9:50:08 GMT 1, Bar 190, really nearby, has really good cocktails, a decent (but overpriced obviously) wine list, and a good space (and decent food). A little bit further away,10 mins walk or so, Barts - it’s a very nice and quirky speakeasy. Not sure about more “orthodox” pubs (I’m more into cocktails than beers).

I thought that the poster were asking for the typical popular pubs as in the good old days, with some bands sometimes and slot machines 🎰 ahaha ... Maybe you are right !

One of those with microwaved Shepard’s pie? Thanks goodness they are a dying bread in central London 😊

haha, long live the traditional pub, none of this cocktail posey chrome, mirror and bright lights stuff.
More spit, sawdust and a light and bitter please.

Royal Albert Hall, by Deleted on May 8, 2019 11:01:12 GMT 1, The Royal Albert Hall is kind of, stuck out on its own. Depending on what time the gig ends, I would recommend getting the tube to somewhere else for a drink. Here's a good selection of pubs to choose from... www.timeout.com/london/bars-and-pubs/the-best-bars-in-london

They are all no smoking now, right ? I remember the Nashville years ago, it was as the fog lol ! and old drunkards Londoners ( kinds of Andy Capp ) at the bar, knowing each rhythm and imitating with the arm the drummer ! They were knowing perfectly (like a conductor) when the song was finished! Bang ! 💥

Anywhere you guys would recommend? You'll be in for a great night, with the obvious poignancy. I've seen all three bands in the last few years and couldn't think of a better line-up or venue to celebrate the life of Pete Shelley. As for pubs?.. The Queen's Arms.

Royal Albert Hall, by turntored on May 8, 2019 18:38:51 GMT 1, I think I've seen Buzzcocks more than any other band Gurn. First saw them back in the late 70's!! I think it's going to be a great night and a wonderful tribute to Pete.
Queens Arms seems to be the place to go!

I'll give the microwaved pie a miss though.... With a username like "turntored" I'd have thought since you are getting down early afternoon you'd be better off taking in the old KJ stomping ground of Ladbroke Grove / Notting Hill. Trawl the pubs up and down Portobello Road ... pop into Rough Trade ... and then catch a bus down to the Royal Albert Hall although it's a leisurely stroll that might afford you time to clear your head should you wish.
As mentioned above The Queens Arms is a good bet ... proximity-wise ... whatever you do, enjoy the day and the gig, which now has extra added poignancy.

Royal Albert Hall, by turntored on May 8, 2019 20:07:44 GMT 1, Well spotted mutatis ! Also seen the great Killing Joke a few times over the years. Always a great gig.
The Buzzcocks gig is on the Fridsy night and we are not home until Sunday.
We will be in that neck of the woods on Saturday for a bit of exploring!

I was there too in the late 70 and I’ve seen so many many bands but it’s a too long story ! Enjoy it sir ! And have a great moment ! ( I worked also then in The RAH too - but then gigs were only jazz, classical, French variety ;((- even boxing 🥊 ahah )

Given you'll have a few hours of free time prior to the show, the suggestion by mutatis would be similar to mine — flâneuring and pub-crawling in the Notting Hill, Portobello Road and Kensington areas.
I've lived in three different locations in Notting Hill, and this would be my trek for a Friday afternoon / early evening:
1. If you're taking the tube, get off at Westbourne Park station. It's on both the Circle line (yellow) and the Hammersmith & City line (pink).
2. First pub: The Westbourne (101 Westbourne Park Villas, London W2 5ED *)
3. Next pubs:
The Cow (89 Westbourne Park Road, London W2 5QH *)
The Prince Bonaparte (80 Chepstow Road, Westbourne Park, London W2 5BE *)
Finch's / The Duke of Wellington (179 Portobello Road, London W11 2ED *)
The Sun In Splendour (7 Portobello Road, London W11 3DA *)
The Windsor Castle (114 Campden Hill Road, Kensington, London W8 7AR *)
The Churchill Arms (119 Kensington Church Street, Kensington, London W8 7LN *)
The Builder's Arms (1 Kensington Court Place, London W8 5BJ *)
The Queen's Arms (30 Queens Gate Mews, London SW7 5QL *)
4. Most of the above also serve decent food and allow you to make table reservations. The Churchill Arms, for example, is well-known for its Thai kitchen.
5. From The Westbourne to the Royal Albert Hall via the various pubs, it's around 4 or 5 kilometres on a downward slope. Doable, unless you're in high heels or have bad knees.
6. Have fun.
