He works for the BBC , he has journalist friends , colleagues , part of his job is to be aware of current affairs so he is aware of Megan's background . his excuse is ignorant , he has financially lost and that is most what he is most upset about.
He has children and I'm sure he would not be amused the negative impact it would have on his wife just after birth when it should be a joyous moment if a nasty stunt was done to his family
He is from London , an ethnically diverse area , he was born or grew up in an area where milwall football club played which in the 70s and 80s had deep seated racism so unless totally lived in a bubble and never followed news updates his excuse is absurd
His apology could be assumed to be damage limitation by pr advisors and his solicitors.

However, I suspect that in 6 months, like Ross and the dispicable Russel Brand he will be on a commercial station back in full swing, and a bit of time it will be like nothing ever happened. Regretably this seems to be the way things are.

Now a criminal investigation involved will confiscate his computers and phones potentially for a data search and any racist content or other things might come to light , can of worms opened over a silly tweet.
Media personalities occasionally get stuck in their bubble and assume they are more important , clever ,witty than they are but certain targets they chose can break their careers
