Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by thos on Jun 6, 2019 17:31:25 GMT 1, I guess the fact that it came with a book should have been a good hint that it was Phaidon. Unfortunately, I didn't put 2 and 2 together, and also didn't even think to DM anyone about it.
I sent Phaidon an enquiry as soon as I saw their email about this in my inbox this morning (I'm in California), but I'm guessing they're long gone. Really weird, though, that I got an automated response saying they'll contact me if they can offer me a print. Why not just say they're sold out? Why even send the email out at all if they were gone to begin with (as everyone seems to believe)? I'm not exactly complaining... sometimes it's nice to think you actually have a chance, sort of like buying lottery tickets with impossible odds.
Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Harland Miller Book • In Shadows I Boogie, by nobokov on Jun 7, 2019 13:04:12 GMT 1, is £3k a good price for a print?
Seems unlikely that someone would pay that much for a print when they can buy the book with the same image for $100. Unless of course that person was caught up in the hype and felt that someone else would pay $5000 for a book and print. But I guess some idiot did buy that Hates Outta Date for 10k. So at least there's that hope that there'll be 200 idiots out there who just love to boogie.

I thought that was a relatively hopeful comment. Isn't most of collecting the hope that some other idiot will pay more than we did someday?

But isn't the appearance of flipability the only reason anyone is paying $4500 for a $75 book and a piece of paper? God knows it ain't for the art, especially when you can acquire large original paintings for that price.

But isn't the appearance of flipability the only reason anyone is paying $4000 for a $100 book and a piece of paper? God knows it ain't for the art, especially when you can acquire large original paintings for that price. To be fair it probably (and most likely) is the motivation for some. This is why these things are better left off the forum now. But come on, let’s not reduce artists prints to just “pieces of paper” with a signature. The whole “But it’s just a ....” argument is kind of boring. And you are actually someone with an intelligent opinion and from what I’ve seen a much broader view of things.
That said $4000 is a lot of money period. If it is an artist that I like / collect then I would still very much consider it based in the work itself. This work by Harland I happen to really like and have had a very enjoyable lengthy convo with the artist about the title and direction of the work which makes me enjoy it even more. There are plenty of people here though that will blindly plop down the $4k because it’s seemingly what the cool kids are doing.

I appreciate the nice undeserved compliment and agree with everything you said. I think I'm rapidly just moving away from expensiveprints and don't see them as money well spent. The etching is a beautiful image and I dig the sentiment of wanting to dance but being embarrassed to do it publicly, but the price for what appears to be a forum hype artist seems ridiculous to me at my income level.
This place is just an interesting ecosystem to observe.I have a feeling that most buyers would be forum members and their comments have to reflect that in order to prop up and justify their investment so that future forum members will also see worth in paying secondary prices and it's fun to see the interchanges.

Although this forum does like to latch onto artists like river leeches I think you will find that Harland’s collector base extend well beyond this place. The last few years the forum has assuredly had some impact on his print market which I also think has since leveled, but the forum has had little to do with his establishment as an artist of merit. And by “merit” I am not taking about how much his work sells for, or who has better auction results.
Good to be able to share differing opinions without it spiraling down the drain every once in a while.

Those who can’t handle change and evolution have said this about art from the raphaelites to pop-art.. Art evolves... there is a place for all of it but it will always change with the times.. don’t fear change.
