Carl Cashman's comment about the appearance of this Banksy in the context of the Royal Academy is a persuasive one. I'm minded to agree the piece would have been much stronger as a street installation.
That said, one of the strengths of this area of the Summer Exhibition 2019 is the complementarity of at least three works featured — the Banksy, the Mickey ears sculpture, and the 'Ceci n'est pas...' Magritte parody.
Regarding the Banksy, it's also worth paying attention to the lock painted white.
No coincidence that this is a Belfry padlock. In other words:
(i) Mickey Mouse-shaped;
(ii) British-made; and
(iii) archaic (commonly used over half a century ago).

I also love how the rat uses the signage to break in. Closed-minded people offer you the tools to undo them.

Banksy at RA summer exhibition , by mojo on Jun 8, 2019 14:37:25 GMT 1, Is the Mickey Mouse sculpture made from an oil drum? I'm going Friday so will be able to see it then. I'll answer my own question since I went yesterday ... its by master of chair Ron Arad titled D.F.W.T.M. 3 and is made from glass fibre and polyester gel coat...not an oil drum! and can be yours for a mere £48K.
So much great work to look at its like a visual explosion ... in a good way!
The stand out pieces for me were definitely the Ron Arad, Marcus Harvey, Jeremy Deller, Banksy David Hepher, Michael Craig Martin(Bond Street) as well as a few artists new to me, I really liked the etchings by Lousie Hayward & James Seou. I was there for a few hours and still didn't see it all, I missed the Emin! I'll definitely be going back for another look.
I really liked this although don't know the artist, anyone know?

Banksy at RA summer exhibition , by kfroms on Jun 8, 2019 16:18:26 GMT 1, The Banksy piece is unfortunately in the first room, directly on the left when you come in. A very busy, crammed room as the surrounding walls are showing the amazing 'animal' related art and keep people from moving on. The 2019 Summer Exhibition is certainly the best one in a while. A lot to discover, the print room is fantastic, and I always love the architects model exhibition. Also happy to have bought a little painting and a print. If you can - go there.
As mentioned earlier I miss the usual Emin print(s) as well - she 'only' has two small bronze sculptures in the exhibition. Your for a mere 70k GBP. Per piece.

Banksy at RA summer exhibition , by mojo on Jun 9, 2019 12:03:22 GMT 1, I wouldn't be surprised if the original padlock was stolen ... its an unlocked lock and despite the area being busy people don't really pay much attention to the floor...it wasn't me!
Perhaps the image used for the listing is a photoshopped mock up supplied to the RA months ago so it could be included in any press and for the program listing.
Having said that what if when you roll the shutter back there's another one?

Varied edition of 2 (left/right) I guess.

I'm now really tempted to go back and lift up the shutter and discover a hidden Banksy...only I'd no doubt get arrested for tampering with the goods and besides getting thrown out of the Academy is not a good look. I'll just wait till someone else does it.
