Indeed. If memory serves (though quite possibly I have rose tinted spectacles in this regard) that long thread had an element of joy at seeing Banksy’s source material. I find it rather odd that any artist might be criticised for using source material. The artistic creativity is in what they make of that material, surely.

Banksy, and how a picture tells a thousand lies, by chevyav53 on Jun 24, 2019 14:18:26 GMT 1, I think sentiment will continue to change toward being more critical of artists of all trades who are not original or don’t give credit for their inspiration. But when you hide behind a mask what do you expect. Will be interesting to see where Banksy’s art is in 20 years as much of the works are not wall worthy and why they stay in flat files.

Either sad you went through my posts to find that I’m a fan or you remember. Anything constructive to say or just stalking sad little man?
As for Tabby, I do enjoy his work but many I would not put on my wall. The only piece that I’ve bought is How to be Loved resin as it translates well for display and I enjoy it daily.

Banksy, and how a picture tells a thousand lies, by fasttwitch on Jun 24, 2019 18:09:37 GMT 1, I remember seeing the Flags image and LIITA image that Banksy used but did not know about these until now. It does actually change how I think about the man who takes big profits from these images. For those in academics plagiarism could be a serious offence. In the music industry the artist who writes the song receives compensation despite the execution of the song being done by another.
Banksy is not about the art it's about the ideas which are unfortunately not Banksy.

Banksy, and how a picture tells a thousand lies, by Adam The Collector on Jun 24, 2019 18:26:49 GMT 1, I have never seen these images other than the Flags photo and am really enjoying it! Being able to see where Banksy pulled imagery / inspiration from with these other images is excellent. It should not diminish your appreciation or thought of originality for the artist. All artists are pulling and playing off from contemporaries and past artists alike. No big deal, this is just understanding more in depth the man himself! 20 years out, cant wait to see what his market looks like then and what collections his prints reside in.

.dappy any chance you can find and link the thread with lots of source images? It’s an interesting read. I’ve tried and failed.

He makes big profits from them 🤦♂️
Are you sure about that?
And Yet, he hardly fucking matters because his creation sufficiently different to be defined as a new piece of art - so you know get back in your Ill informed box

Taking those images above and comparing them to Banksy’s work, one could certainly say he drew inspiration from them. But his final works cannot, in my opinion, be described as plagiarism.

Thanks for that. As it happens I already knew what the word meant. I guess the part we disagree about is the passing them off as his own bit. As I understand it, it is quite established in IP law that an artist can use a source material, and what they create becomes their own, provided it is in some way changed (please forgive the clumsy language I have used). You may say that you don’t care about IP law, and that this is a moral or ethical discussion. Fair enough. We all have our own moral codes. I would say that so far as I’m concerned IP law happens to match my views so far as the moral or ethical discussion is concerned.
