Once an artist is at this level of notoriety, what is the incentive/reason behind staying with a gallery? I imagine the artist could open his/her own gallery, and any connections made via the gallery could easily be made by the artist once he/she has reached this level.

Not sure how these things work with Gallery contracts or if they had a contract, but maybe they just were too far apart to sign a new one.

Even Kanye, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and so on have management and distribution. Self distribution and management, while it might cut out a middle man, is a pain in the ass and outside of most artists area of expertise.

Not a week later, KAWS was off the artist roster on the Perrotin website, and Wednesday the gallery owner confirmed to ARTnews that his departure was official. In a statement, Perrotin said:
This collaboration has come to an end. In any case, we will be satisfied if his career continues to develop in a good way and we wish him all the very best moving forward.
Perrotin said in a recent interview that he thought KAWS would leave his gallery,soon. I am very proud of the work that my team did for KAWS over these 11 years of our collaboration. Unfortunately, that might be not enough to be able to keep him in my roster, considering all the pressure. I doubt he will continue with us for long. Not a week later, KAWS was off the artist roster on the Perrotin website, and Wednesday the gallery owner confirmed to ARTnews that his departure was official.
