The thousands is a good guide thethousands.com.au/melbourne/ & for beer my favourite place is Cookie (for a Leffe  on Swanston Street. I prefer the bars in Melb to Sydney. If your there on the weekend pop into www.section8.com.au/ great vibe, music

I'm going to try to take in the ROA show at Backwoods, Metro Gallery, and Rtist in Melbourne.
Anyone have any recommendations of other galleries to visit?

If your in the CBD check out hosier lane, There is a pretty heavy coverage of art that is always changing. Also collingwood in and around where backwoods is located has some good street pieces. Metro may not have anything urban related on show but i know they have a pretty hefty stock room, that they might pull out for display if you ask, They are a pretty friendly lot.

Haaahahah, i just got back after a De-Tox from Thailand 
Didnt see any art while i was there, but i know theres some good galleries in Abu Dhabi which is only about an hour away....

Bastakya area in the old part of town. Really nice area. The Majalis Gallery is nice and a lovely cafe next door to chill out at. And a load of Galleries with Arabic and contemporary work.the Arabic calligraphy art is def worth looking at ESP if you like Retna etc.
There is time out there so either buy a copy or go online

The DIFC also has loads of other galleries, most of which have exhibitions on at the moment. Had a look in a few last week but didn't see too much that tickled my fancy.

If you do get a taste for arabic calligraphy while you're in Dubai then it'll probably be worth checking out the exhibition of modernist calligraphy at the Ara Gallery; the details are here.
Hassan Massoudy, who is one of the artists taking part in the exhibition, is a bit of a living legend and has heavily influenced lots of arabic graffiti writers like Zepha and Sadhu. There's an excellent book called 'Arabic Graffiti' which covers arabic calligraphy, arabic graffiti and how one has influenced the other.
