I first came across The Toaster at the Urban Games on Clapham Common in c.2001 (there was a great graff line-up; did anyone else go to this?), but they came out of the Wolverhampton graffiti scene in the late 1990โs along with the likes of Dicy. Iโve spotted them all over the place โ flags at the Glastonbury Festival, road markings along the Tour de France, postal stickers in New York โ and thatโs part of what they are all about. The concept was to take a run-of-the-mill, everyday object and reproduce it over and over again until it became iconic and famous. In doing so theyโre raising the question of whether lots of famous things like, for example, pop stars and movie franchises are actually exceptional and noteworthy or whether, like the humble toaster, theyโve just been marketed and given repeated exposure so that they just appear so while actually being ordinary and mundane. They were also one of the first crews to start using the concept of a street logo which was later taken on by the likes of Sickboy. It's been quite a while since I saw the film, so it might say something entirely different to this, but when you've got the time it's well worth checking out.

I went to the urban games too. A bit too young to appreciate how good a line up they actually had! I do remember Cosa tagging my friends black book though, well a guy claiming to be Cosa!
