New work by Lupa, by manchestermike on Oct 1, 2007 9:13:39 GMT 1, I quite like some of the Lupa stuff... BUT... the price!
When an established artist such as Jeff is selling for nearly quarter of the price I think you may have pitched the Lupa ones slightly wrong!

New work by Lupa, by carl on Oct 1, 2007 9:28:27 GMT 1, Where have you been!? I wondered what you would think mike,We have sold quite a few so I think the pricing is quite on the money. The prints will be alot cheaper but I think that when you look at how much time one can take creating an original his probably only on a £7 an hour!!

Neate and Steadman ? you are joking right ? Lupa needs to maybe go lock himself away in a room and work for maybe 5 or 10 years just repeating and repeating his lines etc... no way should this be in the public domain at 500 quid a pop at this stage, and no way should it be taken seriously on these boards.. Just my opinion of course. But tired of seeing all this lame work bandied around. I guess the policy is, "if you haven't got anything positive to say, then don't say it"... but that leads to fascism right ? "nice uniform"
Why is Lupa being discussed on here ? it's not urban, stencil, street, graff... why? cos he's ripped a bit of Neates style and someone thought they could flog it to board members.

New work by Lupa, by manchestermike on Oct 1, 2007 10:18:58 GMT 1, Nu, I think the main point you are making comes back to the price. Neate gave away his early works for free while Lupa is selling similar (and you're right not as good) works for the same price as some established artists originals. I find it quite unbelievable that (and I mean no offense to Lupa here) a complete unknown is trying to sell works at this price - actually MORE than some Adam Neate original works have been going for on ebay.
What's more peturbing is people are paying this money.
Like I said, I quite like a few of them, but the price is madness

I could knock 20 of these up in a day... bad ebay art, 30 quid tops ! you can stick any old bit of cardboard in a white box frame and it'll look mighty fine.
I have no problem with Lupa posting his work up here and selling at reasonable prices to fellow forum members and getting feedback etc etc. becomes part of the loop and process and makes this place an interesting place to be. We like to talk to artist right ?
Now I feel like I'm chatting to salesmen everyday on here.. I'm bombarded everyday with new this, new that...*feel like a mug.
*(+1 for the person who felt like saying "you are")

Don't be like that Lupa... but listen, you're obviously a massive fan of Adam Neate, but can you give us a little bit of backstory on the art, influence, education, history etc... I mean, some of your prices are up there with some major names, Neate developed his style over the last 15 years.. it wasnt just ripped off Picasso or Bacon... this makes it art right ? now if I go copy a load of Neates in a Neate styleee.. well, like In said.. it'd take 10 to 15 years to get anywhere near developing you're own unique & recognisable style

New work by Lupa, by Lupa on Oct 1, 2007 11:02:13 GMT 1, honestly I take everything on board Nuart, and everyone looks to create their own distinctive style for what they will be recognized by, I know you say they are of Neate likening, but to be honest this how I have always drawn and painted, and admittedly one of the pieces on the www.amilasart.com site is a rework of a GCSE piece I submitted at school 16 years ago. I know the cardboard elements have maybe created a general feeling that I am ripping Neates style off and yes I have moved to painting on old cardboard off the influence of Neate as I use to paint on broken plywood and stretched canvases which I could go back to and try to distract from the Neate comparisons, but then again why bother when so many of us so called artist paint on canvas?
+1 for your opinions

New work by Lupa, by Harveyn on Oct 1, 2007 11:27:14 GMT 1, I cannot debate with people having positive and negative comments about this work. That is exactly what this forum is about. Art as always is down to an individuals taste which can vary with time and mood.
Money and price to a certain extent does not come into it (I wish they were cheaper also). If you do not like it you should not buy it. If it was cheaper would it make it better?
As for what it is painted on, what does that matter? People have been painting on cardboard and all sorts of materials for many years.
I still love Happy Meal and of course thats all that matters to me...... ;D ;D ;D
Keep up the good work Lupa...Rome was not conquered in a day

Hey Lupa.. cheers for getting involved, nice one. I have a default respect setting for anyone taking time out to make art, good, bad or indifferent. It's all good.
With your pieces, I'm missing that real emotive pin sharp content. You know, the difference between "sad girl" and "sad girl because her mother left her in a box at the post office, brought up in an orphange, became a heroin addict, was unemployed and drifting for years, begged for a month or two, slept in the doorway of Boots the chemist for 2 years over the hot air vents where one night she found an old copy of Dostoevsky's "crime and punishment" , which she devoured under the harsh fluorescent light night after night until finally hanging on that last paragraph, she suddenly knew in her heart that it would be all right ! that she was more human than human now and she would prevail"
This is what artists can do with a portrait, this is what you have to dig for.. they should become so fucking personal that it almost breaks your heart to sell them. This I'd pay 500 quid and more for
That last paragraph
But that is the beginning of a new story- the story of the gradual renewal of a man, the story of his gradual regeneration, of his passing from one world into another, of his initiation into a new unknown life. That might be the subject of a new story, but our present story is ended.

New work by Lupa, by verbalkint on Oct 1, 2007 11:49:52 GMT 1, I like lupa's stuff, and people charge what they can get dont they? If he can get £400 a pop then good luck to him. I personally think anyone who pays more than a grand for a mark rothko is throwing their money away, its just a few bars of different colour, but because he is a celebrated impressionist (and im sure someone could write an essay on each piece and the 'moods' the artist is conveying) his works sell for millions. A nice big thick splodge of orange, then a big bar of royal blue, with a thin line of green at the bottom. 3 million quid please. Now that takes the piss in my book. Art is worth whatever people are willing to pay.
if all but a few pieces have sold out, then £400 is clearly not over priced is it? and when the online gallery takes their cut that does not leave too much for lupa's efforts in my opinion.
Its naive to say that the name of an artist shouldnt matter, because it clearly does. Had adam neate been a total unknown his latest show would never have sold out at those prices, neither would micallefs LA show, but because of their popularity people are prepared to pay a fortune for their work (including me), but how much would you be willing to pay for your favourite piece if it was produced by an unknown artist. Take your favourite micallef of neate, one that probably cost £25,000 or more, if that exact same work was produced by a total unknown art student, would you even pay £2,500 for it?
If someone sees a Lupa piece that they absolutely love, then £400 is a bargain really isnt it? or is it all about the name?

Terrible composition, bad two dimensional line work, no real depth of feeling, empathy or emotion... what does anyone see in these ?
I can't put my finger on what i like about Lupa's work, but i know what i like, and i really liked it the instant i saw it and that for me is a key factor if i am thinking of throwing my hard earned cash at it. I am guilty of buying prints on impulse in the past only to stash under the bed and try and offload a few months down the road, but i have changed my outlook, abandoned the bandwagon, and decided to be patient and wait for the stuff i really love to become available instead, and i LOVE portraits, the more surreal and different the better, and Lupas work fits the bill, my last three purchases have been a couple of Adam neate cide exhibition portraits, a Michael de feo original self portrait, and now Lupas loud and disorientated piece on cardboard (which i first saw about a month or so ago, and have been pestering Lupa about ever since!), i don't give a shit if Lupa is an unknown, his work has a place on my walls all day long, and if folk like it enough to buy it, they will, and have! (pricewise, yes a bit expensive for an unknown, but i personally prefer spending £400 on a one-off piece i like, albeit by an unknown artist, than £400 on a print from a run of 300 or so by a more established artist.)

New work by Lupa, by Harveyn on Oct 1, 2007 12:28:50 GMT 1, I agree mydeaddogwontwoof.
I have mainly moved to originals which I tend to connect with better (Small, Psaier, Dface, Faile, Denning).
I do think this thread should have been left in its original place as debate is always healthy.

good for you mate.. I think it's cool that you're into it.. maybe I was a bit harsh cos it sometimes feel like art "salespeople"" are constantly badgering us on here... Lupa's a cool guy... and if you like it and can afford it then that's all that counts.
It's not a secret that I'm a bit wary of the " I know what i like" theory of art buying.. or anything else for that matter... it more often than not means "I like what I know"

I can't put my finger on what i like about Lupa's work, but i know what i like, and i really liked it the instant i saw it and that for me is a key factor if i am thinking of throwing my hard earned cash at it. I am guilty of buying prints on impulse in the past only to stash under the bed and try and offload a few months down the road, but i have changed my outlook, abandoned the bandwagon, and decided to be patient and wait for the stuff i really love to become available instead, and i LOVE portraits, the more surreal and different the better, and Lupas work fits the bill, my last three purchases have been a couple of Adam neate cide exhibition portraits, a Michael de feo original self portrait, and now Lupas loud and disorientated piece on cardboard (which i first saw about a month or so ago, and have been pestering Lupa about ever since!), i don't give a s**t if Lupa is an unknown, his work has a place on my walls all day long, and if folk like it enough to buy it, they will, and have! (pricewise, yes a bit expensive for an unknown, but i personally prefer spending £400 on a one-off piece i like, albeit by an unknown artist, than £400 on a print from a run of 300 or so by a more established artist.) good for you mate..
