New work by Lupa, by iwouldfollow youanywhere on Sept 30, 2007 14:42:47 GMT 1, sorry but I really don't like these..seem to have taken elements of neate street work[the now fashionable cardboard]and produced fairly ugly images.really couldnt see any of those on my wall..I like that on some, like 'the thinker' the artist has tried using a simpler line,but sadly the proportions are all wrong..
just my 2 cents

As for the cardboard thing, well, I think its hard when an established artist like neate ends up owning a certain medium like Banksy owns stencils. I guess an artist needs to just go for what they feel they should be working on. Cardboard is also quite cheap!!

thats fair enough..I also like a bit of 'ugliness' in my art,but of the slightly more sophisticated bast variety,if you know what I mean?maybe I just 'get' bast's visual language better than lupas..

I have to say, i am liking Lupas work too, its the ugliness that makes it, the messy lines, the tatty cardboard, i dont think you can compare it with Neate, (apart from the cardboard thing) Lupa has quite a unique style, i bought the Loud and disorientated piece, got a nice white box frame planned for it, can't wait to see it up on the wall.

A lot of us started stencilling before Banksy, many stencillers don't even know him and many people like stencils without knowing who Banksy is ! Same thing for cardboad : I've been using it for 20 years and I'm not the only one. Here in france, there's a guy called Dran who uses cardboard too and a lot of people know him whereas Neate is unknown. You should all visit his brilliant website, by the way ! It's really excellent, and so is the book he's just released.
So, let's all do our stuff without trying to be like X or like Y and without trying either to avoid being like X or like Y ! Let's be ourselves and if some "families" do exist (whose members don't even know each other, sometimes), it's all very well too !

prices for a small one on cardboard is half the price on canvas :
20 x 20 cm = 150 euros
30 x 30 cm = 200 euros
40 x 40 cm = 300 euros

Lupa is a East Anglian based artist, applying his observations and emotions onto old worn corrugated cardboard and broken plywood. Lupa works with spray paint, acrylic and household paints where the outline is either applied by paint pen or sprayed stencil.
His work explores his observations of the dark and false happiness of the modern society. This perspective of a growing self-indulgent culture has been transferred to his art work and is encompassed in the array of characters seen in his paintings. These are created usually with an ugly loose hand and broad jagged outlines while forming a mood with the infill of colours whether sparse or blatantly direct. The pictures tend to depict solitary figures that are alone with their emotional unease.
