I don't think you need to apologise. Fact is, no one really knows, which is why the op is here asking.
I remember when those auctions you mentioned were posted here and there were guesstimates into the hundreds of £k's, but they were the prices achieved at that time.
Banksy prices did fly after these auctions, but they have also dropped back a bit this last year.

I love this piece and it's a very small edition. I would suggest the only way to get an honest price is sending it to one of the big auctions.

I think art item of this magnitude should be put in a major auction house. Although there are fees involved, it will still attract serious buyers of Banksy's work, who don't frequent forums.

It's a beautiful example of Banksy's work in a small edition. These two elements alone take this above just a limited edition print, and into a premium piece if art.

The one thing i like about this thread is the love shown for the Grappling Hook. It wasn't like that in the early days, however it seems people have come around to appreciating what a great piece of art it is.

Never understood the slating of this piece of work early on… most likely to have been done by potential buyers talking down the price to get a bargain. One of the most poignant pieces he’s ever made I reckon.

You cannot set a reserve higher than the low estimate. Sothebys always go with very low estimates, but generally they come good! However, they come good becuase there is generally a lot of previous sales history for prospecive buyers to go by. In the case of the Gappling hook, there isn't, hence a big risk for a consignor! The fact there is no previous sales (apart from two in the early days) just goes to show how hard to come by this piece is, so in fact it could do very well! Just wouldn't want to risk it.

And actually, if it went in it would have been their Banksy only auction in March 2021 and all the prices achieved were not good. It was because there had been Banksy after Banksy auction since the prices quadrupled. Anyway, SO glad i didn't do it then. Sometimes it is all about timing with these things....

Just to correct a few points, auction houses will let you set your own reserve without exception, this is your minimum return unless your expectation is insane. They all will listen to your advice on estimates but will argue strongly that the lower estimate is essential to drum up interest, they will widen the range though. Not all of them would go for no sellers fees on this “type” of piece (ie major artist, very limited, quirky and controversial but brilliant) but 3 out of 4 definitely would. That’s all from my own experience.

Finally it’s a great piece and in my opinion would be in the £450k range at auction top end or gallery based on the movement of other pieces in the market. Which means on a private sale should be £340-375k. Great piece, well done and good luck getting your price!! Also assume you have all the packaging it came with?

Good points! However, if an auction house has an estimate of £1000-£2000 for something, you can't set your reserve at £1500 because if it sells for the low reserve you are stuffed. Would be great if your price range was right...........

Yes exactly - so it is no good if they set the low estimate 3/4 times less than what it is worth (and what they usually go for), which is what Sothebys often do with Banksy - the problem with the Hook is that there is no recent sales of it, so it could perform badly or amazing! So it is risky at auction unless they give you a low estimate you are happy with.
