Banksy Grappling Hook, by sandworm on Jan 10, 2022 16:05:33 GMT 1, Apologies to the OP for the somewhat insulating ยฃ100k earlier comment, I had no idea of their current value other than the two which have sold at auction in 2019.
Good luck with the sale!

I don't think you need to apologise. Fact is, no one really knows, which is why the op is here asking. I remember when those auctions you mentioned were posted here and there were guesstimates into the hundreds of ยฃk's, but they were the prices achieved at that time. Banksy prices did fly after these auctions, but they have also dropped back a bit this last year.
I love this piece and it's a very small edition. I would suggest the only way to get an honest price is sending it to one of the big auctions.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by Dibbs 45 on Jan 11, 2022 11:49:49 GMT 1, I think art item of this magnitude should be put in a major auction house. Although there are fees involved, it will still attract serious buyers of Banksy's work, who don't frequent forums.
It's a beautiful example of Banksy's work in a small edition. These two elements alone take this above just a limited edition print, and into a premium piece if art.
Good luck

Problem with the major auction houses is that they want to put lower reserves to attract buyers (Sothebys for example, as they always do) and there is no guarantee. As there is no real RECENT sales history, it's a hard one!

That wouldnโt stop you setting a higher reserve would it? I donโt know how the top tier auction houses work, never having bought or sold there. But is there anything to stop you going with their estimate, but setting a higher reserve?

Any top auction house would love to have this.
Try a few for estimates and zero fees. Best of luck with it

Sometimes they might adjust it by a small bit but won't ever put it near market value.
They will find it hard to price this piece

Banksy Grappling Hook, by Gunny on Jan 11, 2022 12:54:32 GMT 1, You cannot set a reserve higher than the low estimate. Sothebys always go with very low estimates, but generally they come good! However, they come good becuase there is generally a lot of previous sales history for prospecive buyers to go by. In the case of the Gappling hook, there isn't, hence a big risk for a consignor! The fact there is no previous sales (apart from two in the early days) just goes to show how hard to come by this piece is, so in fact it could do very well! Just wouldn't want to risk it.

It was because there had been Banksy after Banksy auction since the prices quadrupled. Anyway, SO glad i didn't do it then. Sometimes it is all about timing with these things....

Banksy Grappling Hook, by JFCC on Jan 11, 2022 14:12:16 GMT 1, Just to correct a few points, auction houses will let you set your own reserve without exception, this is your minimum return unless your expectation is insane. They all will listen to your advice on estimates but will argue strongly that the lower estimate is essential to drum up interest, they will widen the range though. Not all of them would go for no sellers fees on this โtypeโ of piece (ie major artist, very limited, quirky and controversial but brilliant) but 3 out of 4 definitely would. Thatโs all from my own experience.
Finally itโs a great piece and in my opinion would be in the ยฃ450k range at auction top end or gallery based on the movement of other pieces in the market. Which means on a private sale should be ยฃ340-375k. Great piece, well done and good luck getting your price!! Also assume you have all the packaging it came with?

Banksy Grappling Hook, by casual on Jan 11, 2022 14:17:40 GMT 1, March 2021 was the latest sale of the grappling hook on this forum, it was advertised here & swiftly picked up by a gallery for over ยฃ400k.
Some will argue that this sale was at the โpeakโ of the Banksy market, Iโd be pretty confident of achieving a similar figure though as the smaller edition & quirky pieces by Banksy like this donโt seem to be effected by the fluctuation in the market unlike the general releases.
These were ยฃ40k + VAT on release, not a bad investment at allโฆ Good luck with the sale!

The estimate is different to the reserve.
The estimate is the price the auction house believe it will sell at before fees etc.
The reserve is the price they are allowed to sell for on behalf of the owner which if not met is passed.
The reserve will be in the estimate range. As I say just from my experience ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Still a great piece!

Good points! However, if an auction house has an estimate of ยฃ1000-ยฃ2000 for something, you can't set your reserve at ยฃ1500 because if it sells for the low reserve you are stuffed. Would be great if your price range was right........... Yes of course have everything it came with......... The estimate is different to the reserve. The estimate is the price the auction house believe it will sell at before fees etc. The reserve is the price they are allowed to sell for on behalf of the owner which if not met is passed. The reserve will be in the estimate range. As I say just from my experience ๐คทโโ๏ธ Still a great piece!

Yes exactly - so it is no good if they set the low estimate 3/4 times less than what it is worth (and what they usually go for), which is what Sothebys often do with Banksy - the problem with the Hook is that there is no recent sales of it, so it could perform badly or amazing! So it is risky at auction unless they give you a low estimate you are happy with.
