Banksy's on eBay • Real or Fake?, by lv90210 on Aug 17, 2019 4:58:14 GMT 1, I would just like to add, my 'stop and search' (71/500) was stolen from my house some years ago, the break in organised by a forum member. I'm convinced he had the paperwork and sales invoices for his own stop and search, and duplicated them with my print, to sell on, changing the number to match his. You know who you are.
Sorry to hear this, there is some real scum in this world.
Do you not think it's worth shaming this person to protect people in the future ? I imagine this will not be a one off with someone of this level.

Banksy's on eBay • Real or Fake?, by spaceshrew on Aug 17, 2019 9:19:24 GMT 1, Often with this kind of crime, where no one has been physically injured, the Police can only throw so much time at it understandably.
They were very sure, as I'am who arranged the break in, but the evidence couldn't be found sadly, the reason I have never named the suspect, or even hinted at their identity.
Just be careful who you invite into your homes and show your collections too.

That is terrible and heartbreaking . I’d definitely approve of a ‘name and shame’ in this case .. shame about the evidence .

Banksy's on eBay • Real or Fake?, by met on Aug 17, 2019 17:35:22 GMT 1, You present a very convincing case here. The seller does have a lot of circumstantial evidence, such as auction labels etc. Which would be difficult to fake. Would you think it is possible he is the owner of the Original and is selling a fake with his labels ?
The most complicated and time-consuming work would have been counterfeiting the print and blindstamp.
Regarding the Bonhams material pictured in the eBay listing, I don't see anything especially difficult to fake or otherwise get hold of (and some of this material is nonsensical):
(i) doctored invoice, easily created by someone with access to a copy of a genuine invoice;
(ii) partially filled-in (i.e. insufficiently completed) registration and bidding form — such forms being available to anybody who presents themselves at the auction house and asks;
(iii) compliments slip, easily faked or just grabbed from a reception desk (but which aren't in any event normally provided to winning bidders at auctions);
(iv) some bizarre card with the auction lot details — text that looks like it might have been copied from the sale catalogue [Cannot imagine any auction house actually printing such a card. What purpose would it serve?];
(v) random string tag with "45" stamped on it, which would not be overly complicated to acquire or to fake (but also wouldn't accompany an auction lot consisting of a work on paper); and
(vi) a ticket for the sale, that may be genuine, or simply faked and then torn and crumpled for appearances. I attended the event in 2009 and wasn't even aware that tickets may have been sent out to potential bidders. The sale was open to every person who just showed up on the night.
__________
With respect to the identity of the fraudster, it could be anyone with access to an authentic Stop and Search print and COA.
The 2009 sale at Bonhams provided a convenient and credible fake-provenance story for the eBay seller, famileebusiness. They knew that their marks would likely check to ensure that a sale took place for the print with edition number 159/500.
For scammers, publicly-available information like what's accessible on Bonhams' website is therefore often a godsend. Because that is precisely what lulls inexperienced, stupid or inattentive buyers into a false sense of security while they make superficial attempts at carrying out their due diligence.

Here`s something funny for you, found on the german little sister of ebay, called "ebay-kleinanzeigen":
The seller replied on my question of the provenance, it`s a gift from his uncle, who was in New York at the same time, when Banksy was active there (no date, no PC, absolutely "not(h)ing" ). He raised the price after my inquiry from EUR 4 k up to EUR 250 k immediately ...
Enjoy art

A bit odd they took a photo of the COA a month before it was written….
