COMMANDA AVAILABLE THURSDAY, JULY 18TH!โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ โ โ "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" co-curator Pedro Alonzo has this to say about Commanda: โ โ This print is a fictionalized portrait of Shepard Fairey's wife, Amanda. The title, which is a hybrid of her name and the word, "command," acts as a verbal description of her confident and powerful character. Although a familiar subject, the artist renders her partially veiled and diverts her attention away from the viewer. Holding a spray can in one hand and cloaking her face with the other, she is mysterious, but her intentions are clear. Shown as an anonymous female purveyor of the street art practice favored by Fairey, as a mixed-race protagonist/antagonist she helps to upend traditional tropes of female portraiture. Instead, Fairey presents her as a universal model of women in his eyes, who are fierce, independent, and proactive.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ โ โ Commanda. Serigraph on Coventry Rag, 100% Cotton Custom Archival Paper with hand-deckled edges. 30 x 41 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 89. $900. Comes with certificate of authenticity. Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 18, 2019 16:46:36 GMT 1, DEFEND DIGNITY AVAILABLE TUESDAY, MAY 28TH!โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ In 2017 I worked with Aaron Huey of @amplifierart and several other artists for a series called WE THE PEOPLE; an effort meant to champion an appreciation for ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity. On Inauguration Day, people across the Capital carried our WE THE PEOPLE posters into the streets, hung them up in windows, or pasted them onto walls. We continued to see this movement throughout several other rallies around the world that year, including the Women's March in 2017. This "Defend Dignity" piece is one of three that I created for the original series. For this image, I collaborated with photographer Arlene Mejorado to create a portrait of Maribel Valdez Gonzalez as a symbol of hope and humanity.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ In celebration of #FACINGTHEGIANT #OBEYGIANT30TH, I am releasing this "Defend Dignity" piece as a 30 x 41-inch fine art print on custom paper. If you weren't able to get your hands on this print in 2017, now is your chance! A portion of proceeds will benefit Espacio Migrante, a bi-national non-profit organization that works in the areas of Tijuana and San Diego, focusing on supporting migrants, refugees, and deportees.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ We the People need to come together under a new symbol of hopeโ one that reminds us that OUR America is one of equal humanity, and does not demean or discriminate. We need you to help us take back this narrative. We don't have any one easy solution, but we do know this: we must be greater than fear, we must defend dignity, and we must protect each other. Take this art in your hands and start now.โ โ - Shepardโ โ
โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ โ End corruption, get money out of politics, restore democracy โ these are calls to action that I will continue to push and champion to diminish the corrupting force of corporate and special interests funds and lobbying in our political system. Our system allows powerful corporations and special interests to use their money and influence to put profits ahead of the general well being of the populace. Almost every instance of policies that put corporate profits before the needs and health of people and the environment can be tracked to corporate influence on policy. @representus is fighting for campaign finance reform and proceeds from this print will go to help end the legal bribery of politicians. For further reading check out Lawrence Lessig's book, "America, Compromised," which thoroughly articulates the systemic problems and is a fast read! โ Shepardโ โ

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 18, 2019 16:48:32 GMT 1, In November 2015, Shepard Fairey unveiled a public art installation, a giant sphere suspended between the first and second tier of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, entitled โEarth Crisis.โ Designed in honor of the World Conference on Climate Change, the massive sphere was inscribed with a mandala-inspired design adorned with floral motifs. Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 18, 2019 16:50:01 GMT 1, I chose "Bias by Numbers" as an important piece that features an intersection of abuse of authority by police and racism. In it I am addressing racial bias in policing, criminal justice, and media culture. Black people are 5 times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people, and 4 times more likely to be subjected to unnecessary use of force, or 4 times more likely to be killed by the police when unarmed. The stats revealing racial bias in prosecution/sentencing are also compelling. Convictions for drug possession are almost 6 times higher for blacks and African Americans are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โฃโ โฃโ โ Media characterizations of black protesters use words like "agitators," โthugs," or "hoodlums,โ whereas white protesters are "exercising free speech" or "expressing their convictions" and "showing what democracy looks like." I hope this art doesn't only appeal visually but allows viewers to look at the layers of information and facts and think about how to make positive changes to patterns of injustice. A portion of proceeds will go to Black Lives Matter.-S

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 18, 2019 16:51:05 GMT 1, According to co-curator of "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent," Pedro Alonzo: This work points out societyโs blindness to a rigged system and systemic abuse of power. The use of the sinister soldier-like police officer in riot gear mirrors the riots in Ferguson, Missouri caused by the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson. The image builds on a previous piece, โIโm Gonna Kick Your Ass and Get Away With It,โ which deals with Faireyโs personal experience with police brutality. Having been jailed for putting art in public space, the artist has intimate knowledge of police brutality. Apart from being struck in the face by an officer while handcuffed, Fairey, a type 1 diabetic, has been denied insulin while incarcerated; a life-threatening situation. The artist explains that the title, โMy Florist is a Dick,โ is an ironic statement referring to the surprise weโd feel if the local florist was a โsadistic asshole,โ but that we should not be surprised that โcops are often dicks who abuse power.โ The flower inserted into the end of the baton is a metaphor Fairey uses to convey non-violent protest. The skull under the riot helmet is a reference to John Carpenterโs 1988 film, โThey Live,โ in which an alien elite rules the planet. They control humanity through the use of subliminal messaging in advertising.๏ปฟ

"This โDamaged Wrong Path Muralโ large format print is the largest and most complex fine art screen print edition I have made. The print is inspired by the large mural comprised of 12 canvas paintings featured in my Damaged show. The โWrong Path Muralโ represented a selection of the most important images and concepts from Damaged, which was the largest and most ambitious art show of my career."

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 19, 2019 12:30:57 GMT 1, According to co-curator of โFacing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent,โ Pedro Alonzo: In November 2015, Shepard unveiled his latest public art installation โEarth Crisis,โ a giant sphere suspended between the first and second floor of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Designed in honor of COP21 โ the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, the massive sphere was inscribed with a mandala-inspired design decorated with floral motifs and a silhouette of the iconic Parisian landmark. The original design that inspired the Parisian installation can be seen in the print here, which was created in 2014 to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council to aid in their efforts to influence legislation to protect the environment. Shepard re-designed the original black and white design, adopting a blue motif to heighten the teardrop element and alluding to the importance of sustainability in clean air and water. This emblem serves as the central shield depicted within the larger Paris installation.
Earth Crisis. Serigraph on 100% Cotton Custom Archival Paper with hand-deckled edges. 30 x 41 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 89. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 19, 2019 12:32:37 GMT 1, The lotus blossom has a millennial history dating back to ancient Egypt and early Buddhism. It is currently considered a sacred flower due to its daily cycle of emerging from mud or dirty river water clean and unscathed by the environment in which it grows. The lotus is a symbol of hope and purity; the flower radiates light. In this work by Shepard Fairey, it is surrounded by a crescent moon adorned with stars, a reference to the Virgin of Guadalupe who also stands on the moon, a symbol of purity in Catholicism. Fairey describes the images as โbeauty and resolution out of chaos.โ The artist reminds us that in spite of adversity, hope and humanity can merge from every situation. โObey Lotus Ornamentโ stands out among the selection of works in this exhibition because it does not address socio-political issues, nor does it make a provocative statement. The artist simply intended to make a beautiful image that is undeniably appealing to all. Fairey refers to ornamental works as a โTrojan Horseโ intended to draw the viewer in regardless of political orientation. The structured and organic image of the lotus flower is often incorporated into murals as a decorative element alongside intentionally provocative imagery.

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 19, 2019 17:38:16 GMT 1, Don't forget this LF...
Yup definitely makes the top 5 all time best

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 22, 2019 18:55:37 GMT 1, Also dropping tomorrow
The masked woman, her face covered and partially shaded, is mysterious. She looks directly at the viewer with determination. Her ethnicity is undetermined; the viewer can project their identity on the figure. The use of the word โMujer,โ โwomanโ in Spanish, and the mask is a nod to the Zapatista movement in Southern Mexico, and armed anti-globalization group that rebelled against the Mexican government demanding indigenous rights and democracy. The eyes remind Fairey of Emma Peel, played by Diana Rigg, the heroine in the 1960โs television program, The Avengers. The work is a celebration of feminity, as audacious and assertive women portrayed in 1960โs spy films. In 2005 Shepard and his wife Amanda became parents. As the father of two daughters and married to a woman with a strong character, Fairey addressed sexism by rendering images of powerful, defiant women. His portraits of women are in part of a projection of his daughters, a reflection of his wife and an assault on historical portrayals of women appearing nude, powerless, and submissive.
Text supplied by co-curator of โFacing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent,โ Pedro Alonzo.
Mujer Fatale. Serigraph on Coventry Rag, 100% Cotton Custom Archival Paper with hand-deckled edges. 30 x 41 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 89. $900. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Available Tuesday, July 23rd @ 12 PM PDT

Shepard Fairey LARGE FORMAT Thread, by Whitefish on Jul 25, 2019 22:57:16 GMT 1, According to โFacing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissentโ co-curator, Pedro Alonzo:
A little girl cradles a grenade with a rose unaware of the military planes that fly overhead. Her posture is deliberately innocent, appearing to have her eyes closed, with her lips nearly kissing the weaponry in her hands, as if a doll. The sense of danger is pervasive, with her fingers positioned on the trigger. The image seems to ask the question, โHow did war become so commonplace and banal that it seems fitting in a paint-by-numbers style image?โ
Looking to the haunting 1964 political ad for then-presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson, which featured a young blonde-haired girl initiating a nuclear countdown by pulling petals from a daisy, Fairey is interested in continuing American culture of fear. With the escalation of US military action over the years, from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War, the artist searches for meaning by portraying this young girl as both a potential victim of conflict or a possible savior for the future, capable of breaking the cycle of violence with a peaceful act.

This jumped straight to the front of the frame queue given that it wouldn't fit in my flat file. Was pricey to frame but well worth it. Not sure on exact weight but it was struggle to carry for more than the three minutes it took to walk from my car to the apartment. I got it hanging with two 40 lbs hooks and it hasn't fallen yet. So it's definitely below 80 lbs haha.
I made the mistake of going with glass rather than acrylic and I think that's the main contributor to the weight. Definitely making mental note of acrylic going forward.

The next print in the "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" print series is "Proud Parents." Here's how co-curator Pedro Alonzo explains the work:โ โ Motivated by his long-held interests in using art to encourage critical awareness and dissent, in this print the artist co-opts the aesthetic of currency and popular tropes of the middle class to render a dystopian view of the American family. Created during the second term of the George W. Bush presidency, this print questions the increasingly skewed national values of this country and the role of money in furthering that condition.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ With a deliberately vintage design, a couple cradles a bomb as if their child. Their loving and optimistic display, however, is surrounded by verbal puns that undermine their position and future. The family unit is consumed by a government that sponsors a nonsensical American scene, interested in investing more in the military instead of education.โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ โ Proud Parents. Serigraph on Coventry Rag, 100% Cotton Custom Archival Paper with hand-deckled edges. 30 x 41 inches. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 89. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.
