Damien Hirst FOR SALE on ebay, by avec art on Aug 9, 2019 13:14:06 GMT 1, It's fine really. I was kinda joking, the drawings I'd be chuffed with, just the smiley he's drawn does look a little dodgy. Apparently he's been known to pay for his restaurant meals with sketches on napkins.

Damien Hirst FOR SALE on ebay, by Chris JL on Aug 9, 2019 14:58:44 GMT 1, Does the smiley justify such a price bump? That’s more than twice current rates for Valium, and one with hand annotations went at auction last year for basically the usual price.

Not a bargain.
spot prints sitting everywhere at the moment. Buyers holding at high prices, but few to no transactions... Like a real estate market about to tank
But hey, it’s a piece of “art history” !

As a separate point, I would encourage mack to challenge his friend about why they're hunting for Opium in particular.
__________
It's an issue previously mentioned here regarding the LSD print also released through Eyestorm:
1. In case the friend is only concerned about acquiring a pretty picture by an artist with high name recognition, all is fine. Provided they're aware of (and taking precautions against) the significant number of fakes on the market*, there's no need to ask further questions.
2. But if this friend is interested as well in the extent to which specific processes and mediums tie in with an artist's wider body of work, then query the point of buying a Lambda print by Damien Hirst.
Opium is a C-type — a photo of the original piece. And if presented with the choice of buying:
(i) a photographic printout of a spot painting; or
(ii) one of the many spot woodcuts, etchings or screenprints still available at source (e.g. at Manifold Editions),
my own preference would be to gravitate towards option (ii).

... but then again, Valium is an amazing [from a totally subjective perspective] piece that does speak to me... and that’s a lambda C type print... I might swap a woodcut for it if you are interested ;-)
Always thought that the medium is a mean to an end... and I’m old enough to still remember my grand mother (an avid art junky and a student of Michele Cascella) telling me how, in her time, acrylic paint was not considered, by most, appropriate for “real” artists (despite being e.g. what allowed the surrealists to do some of their best “grattage”...)
...but what do I know. Probably it’s just the fact that Valium used to hang on the wall of my shrink’s office ;-)
