Damien Hirst FOR SALE on ebay, by AC on Nov 13, 2020 16:28:33 GMT 1, I see this is back on eBay again, in another very short auction due to the winner of the previous auction being a 'timewaster'. Can anyone shed any light on this print:
The label on the reverse of the frame states that it was framed in December 2011. My understanding is that while the prints were made in late 2011, the bulk of them weren't signed until early 2012 before dispatch by Other Criteria.
The edition number is followed by 'Me'. I know that Meprobramate was accompanied by the Controlled Substances print as a set, but it was also offered individually. The way the edition number is written is different from most of that Spot-print run, nor have I seen any with the 'Me' addition.
The approx. mid-point edition number chosen for framing in December 2011 seems like a strange choice and it looks like same has been obscured in the photo of the actual framed print in the auction. The signature does look spot on (pardon the pun).
I know that set framed for the lunch event in Bond Street weren't done by Darbyshire and there was some issues with the quality, but they were ultimately forced to run with what they had. The framer on this example doesn't appear to be London based either.
I see that it's stated that it's delivery only and there is no paperwork. Thoughts?

Seller hasn't responded to some very basic questions I asked about it's history.
Too much emphasis on payment within 24 hours and not enough on divulging information about the actual print itself.
Avoid.

Instinctively, some things just don't seem right.
I hadn't realised it had been sold before, the pictures and description are essentially one of the same.
I'm curious as to the origins of the print in the photos. Admittedly, even for the ยฃ3.5k it went for the other night, I'd expect pictures with slightly higher production values. Does make me wonder what would ultimately be delivered to the "winner".
Also noted that the seller isn't backwards in coming forwards in stating demands in the new listing. I guess if it looks too good to be true....

Stay well clear of these types of listings. I guess getting 3.5k on eBay and then refunding it after 2 week dispute is cheaper than a pay day loan....

Most definitely. Particularly in US auction houses where authentication isnโt as easily performed as it is here or in some cases completely unknown.
