Original works from new artists??, by cnrdvln on Jul 24, 2019 10:56:50 GMT 1, I'm looking to purchase a couple originals from a few up and coming artists. They will be large, around about 150cm x 100cm. I know the spread in prices is rather large, but from an artist who has sold out a couple prints per say, how much should we be paying for originals from said artist? Any advice would be appreciated!
Name 4 of the artists your looking at

Original works from new artists??, by orchid on Jul 24, 2019 11:21:03 GMT 1, Random question showing some lack of knowledge or experience. I could knock out some edition for £50 on photoshop, call myself an 'artist' , get some hype going to sell out and sell you an original. Yours for 5000, sir.
Or, check out some of the degree show artist or smaller galleries and see what you like and what they're charging - check art IRL.
May cost you a few hundred or a few thousand.

Original works from new artists??, by JL Broooks on Jul 24, 2019 11:28:46 GMT 1, Probably equally confusing as the replies above, but at least I'll give it a try when it comes to numbers:
I would say around 2000 GBP for that size of an original from a medium known up-and-coming young artist. If you`re talking Oli Epp or Maja Djordjevic or the like, 2000 obviously only gives you nibbles..
UK / US degree show artists sell that size originals even cheaper - around 1200 gbp.

Original works from new artists??, by k2 on Jul 24, 2019 11:43:20 GMT 1, Changed the question - would lead to more or a discussion than certain people taking me to the slaughterhouse. Something that might help - if you look on Artsy, you can filter by a price range and/or by size.
So let's say you want to spend somewhere between $1000 and $5000, and you want something substantial - so perhaps 32 inches minimum in both dimensions, you can generate a search:
www.artsy.net/collect/painting?price_range=1000-5000&height=32-%2A&width=32-%2A
From there you can scroll through the hundreds (thousands?) of pieces that are available within your price range and see if anything catches your eye. When you find a piece you like, clicking to view more works by the artist will lead you down a rabbit hole - you'll end up with more and more browser tabs open. Before you know it, 3 days have gone by, you've barely moved, eaten or slept, and your loved ones are starting to get concerned for your welfare.
Fun though.

Original works from new artists??, by Coach on Jul 24, 2019 12:50:49 GMT 1, There are many artists whose work is very well priced.
However your taste may differ from mine.
I would suggest moving away from considering whether they have had sell out prints. Many artists simply don’t produce prints, or they are very much secondary to what they do.
Here’s a few suggestions from my own collection
Mikel Del Rio
http://instagram.com/p/Bk-8U8Aluy2
Kelly Blevins (son’s collection)
http://instagram.com/p/BsbLOBFlJMC
Case
http://instagram.com/p/Brnty7UF1bE
Ian Hodgson
http://instagram.com/p/B0Ld3hYFgsd
All of these originals were reasonably priced. All bought direct from the artist, save the Case that was bought at auction (his secondary prices are ridiculously cheap). If any peak your interest, feel free to get in touch and I’ll be happy to help in any way I can.

Can understand why OP finds pricing for originals confusing. I find establishing the right price for originals really hard to navigate, as it's something I'm quite new to. Recently I've looked at work by a young artist whose work I've liked for a while, who doesn't seem to sell very much, and a very popular artist (at least on here) I was looking to commission. Both charge the same amount for their work. To me, the younger artist seems to have priced themselves too high, but I'd feel really insulting if I went to them and said I reckon they're worth about half that. I don't mean 'worth' in the sense of their potential to increase in value, which doesn't matter that much to me really, but what I'd consider a fair price to have their work on my wall. I don't really know how to have that conversation with an artist. Any tips on that would be interesting.

I think honesty is usually the best bet. Clearly one has to consider factors such as the artist’s popularity. But also the amount of time the artist might have spent creating the art. If an artist has clearly spent many many hours working on a piece, the artist should want to achieve an appropriate return for that labour, even if they are relatively unknown. I discuss the price sought with an artist. If I think it’s a little too high I see no harm in saying so. That said it’s usually my own financial constraints that prevents me from buying something and all the artists I talk to understand that. It often leads to the artist offering me something else that I can afford.

If I had unlimited cash I'd happily pay a young artist loads, but I'm quite far short of unlimited.

But I can't see how to to begin a new search of that type from the app!

Original works from new artists??, by Deleted on Jul 25, 2019 17:49:28 GMT 1, What’s people’s thoughts on Mel Bochner, looking at a print as originals way out of league
One of favourite artists!!. I’m buying a 70x50 original when the right one comes up.
Krakow witkin in the USA seem to be the best gallery for stock and fair prices.
$18500 for an original this size
I should point out he’s as far from emerging or new as it gets. Been painting since the 60s maybe 50s

Yeah sorry wrong thread to bring up but didn’t think it deserved a new one given everyone was throwing in two pence worth on artists 😁 Post a pic if find one!

I do like that kind of work but this kind of work has been done for a bit by so many that I m wondering where the value here since it isnt in the originality.

If you wanna flog a couple s**t prints from a nobody onto uneducated collectors, then sure, f**k originality, but otherwise, I disagree 100%.
