In terms of price, every other edition has sold out so I'm guessing PTA has a good gauge on his market and current demand (although I have heard whispers that his aftermarket prices have started to drop again). I also am a firm believer that artists should produce works for all budgets: Kaws did the open editions, Banksy did a bunch of posters and the box set, and Retna, admittedly only this year, released those decks that were mostly under 1k. If your dead set on owning a retna, the decks are a decent option and damn pretty in person (I own the cheap one). So that being said, let the man charge what he wants. He worked up from a local graff artist to world-wide well known, if often disliked, contemporary artist.
However, IMHO I think PTA may have slightly overpriced the recent releases. There are so many of the last print on ebay and elsewhere that is seems like most people bought to flip. The others are less common, but I also expect they were better produced (I love me some diamond dust).
Anyways, good luck to anyone going for one!

Full disclosure I actually like this print but the idea of putting thousands of dollars in this jackasses pockets doesn’t sit right with me. There are so many other artists out there that I’d rather support than Retna. If he wants to booze it up and act like an asshole that’s on him. It’s the beating up women thing that crosses the line for me. But whatever, I’m sure this print will sell out and I’m the last person who’s opinion he cares about. |
