*SOLD* Shepard Fairey Obey Lotus 2019 AT COST, by Earl Grey 2nd on Aug 11, 2019 10:36:21 GMT 1, Purchased back on July 23rd directly from Obey, I have been offered a different piece which I'm short on (I thought I could buy both but clearly my math was wrong...!). Still sealed in the tube driectly from Obey in the states. Happy to take it out and post pictures, or buyer can view first in Bromley, London. Buyer pays shipping so PM for estimate, or you can pickup. Pictures are from the Obey website for reference (I am not sure what number I have as I havent opened the tube yet but will take a look!).
Not looking to make money here -- selling at actual cost ($900 + $84 shipping = actual cost to me was £794.20 which I am happy to show on my bank statement thanks to the god awful exchange rate at the moment) in case any one missed out on this. Also just had a bill for 50 quid from Fedex for import duties as well which I wont add to the total! (so i will be losing money on this). Deserves a good home. It's a big piece. Happy to accept USD as well.
Details from the Obey website: -
The lotus blossom has a millennial history dating back to ancient Egypt and early Buddhism. It is currently considered a sacred flower due to its daily cycle of emerging from mud or dirty river water clean and unscathed by the environment in which it grows. The lotus is a symbol of hope and purity; the flower radiates light. In this work by Shepard Fairey, it is surrounded by a crescent moon adorned with stars, a reference to the Virgin of Guadalupe who also stands on the moon, a symbol of purity in Catholicism. Fairey describes the images as “beauty and resolution out of chaos.” The artist reminds us that in spite of adversity, hope and humanity can merge from every situation. “Obey Lotus Ornament” stands out among the selection of works in this exhibition because it does not address socio-political issues, nor does it make a provocative statement. The artist simply intended to make a beautiful image that is undeniably appealing to all. Fairey refers to ornamental works as a “Trojan Horse” intended to draw the viewer in regardless of political orientation. The structured and organic image of the lotus flower is often incorporated into murals as a decorative element alongside intentionally provocative imagery.
Text supplied by co-curator of “Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent,” Pedro Alonzo.

*SOLD* Shepard Fairey Obey Lotus 2019 AT COST, by rodgro on Aug 15, 2019 3:27:29 GMT 1, I don’t get it...literally everything the guy makes sells out in seconds but someone asking original cost and not a cent more and it sits for several days without a sale or even comment. Not sure what to make of the difference between the primary and secondary markets. I get that his reach from his site for primary sales is much larger than the UAA forum but it seems odd that a collector hasn’t grabbed it. I suppose there is a big difference between the demand for a $55 print of 450 edition and a $900 print edition of 89 as some simply may not have the means to buy it. You may want to consider reaching out to the Obey team as they may have a waiting list of people waiting to see if any were returned. It’s a gorgeous piece. Best of luck. R

*SOLD* Shepard Fairey Obey Lotus 2019 AT COST, by Earl Grey 2nd on Aug 15, 2019 22:28:08 GMT 1, Completely agree. I'm amazed no one has reached out. Happy to accept USD $ or GBP. Dont mind taking a little hit on it as well (jlike the 50 quid import duty fee from Fedex!). This print sold out in minutes (I'm not joking) and is bloody striking in the flesh.
If anyone is interested let me know. Open to sensible offers as well. Great idea re: Obey. I'll ping them now! thank you!

*SOLD* Shepard Fairey Obey Lotus 2019 AT COST, by jay4077 on Aug 16, 2019 15:45:17 GMT 1, I see two things with these new anniversary-releases:
1) Many bought for a quick flip, but the release price is high, and there is 10 x 89 prints released over a short period. 890 prints means that the end-user marked is saturated and investors are not keen on putting $1k in one Fairey print. That means a lot of flippers are trying to get their money back while they can.
2) The image already exist in a edition of 450, so the image is not unique. Also the size isn't that wall friendly and the cost of framing is expensive.

*SOLD* Shepard Fairey Obey Lotus 2019 AT COST, by Earl Grey 2nd on Aug 20, 2019 7:40:49 GMT 1, jay4077 Probably, but I don’t think that’s a fair reflection of his market. Not all his works sell out and I know people like to turn some of these prints around, but having lived in LA For the past ten years before coming back to Blighty, he has a huge following their and most of his stuff is wall friendly and really suits the style of houses out there. Very different to the UK where space is at a premium and framing is a lot more expensive. I know a lot of people that buy his prints and just love the size and format of them and would never sell them as he’s a local boy (I used to live close to his studio down in frog town so you see a lot of shows) and very LA friendly and the framers I used to use (Castelli on Washington Blvd, great framers btw if you’re in that area!) used to do all his framing for his shows and private clients and always had hundreds of pieces which would suggest they weren’t just being flipped.
I certainly didn’t buy this to flip, and never have actually flipped anything on this forum. In fact I think I’ve lost money on every piece I’ve sold! Just over extended myself on this one, and always loved his lotus images (he used to use this a lot) so thought I’d offer it up to anyone interested at cost (in fact I will lose money on this as I’ve paid import duty as well and open to offers). If it doesn’t sell then I’ll get it framed one day and up on the wall but felt it’s one of his best recently as it’s more back to his roots, and thought someone who missed out might be interested as there’s a lot of genuine art lovers on here. Buy art because you like it, not because you think you’ll make money. Art needs to be loved and put up on the wall and I would rather that and take a hit, than see it sit in a tube for years.
