Are you OK with the fact that at least three artists have released hello kitty prints in the last 5 weeks or so? Does that not trouble you? Have street art and advertising merged into one entity now?
How many 'street artists' have used Mickey Mouse, Coca Cola, Skulls, Soup Cans.... the list goes on and on
you could easily ask had Street Art and Athena not mearged into one entity as every person with a spray can also had a print for sale - some of these so called Artists don't even have spray cans....
I quite like some of the Kitty Art - and my Mrs bought one - and it wasn't by Lister of Fairey.....

I'm aware of artists paying homage to brands (if you call it that)over a long career but I've never personally witnessed so many artists independently doing it for one particular brand in such a short space of time. It chills my very soul.

Anthony Lister π¦πΊ Australian Contemporary Artist, by faute on Dec 10, 2010 17:27:11 GMT 1, How is Hello Kitty more Chilling than a Ben Eine Handbag?
(Almost) Nobody would claim that a Ben Eine Handbag is a piece of art.
Artists working for brands, selling products, etc. is different than this. Do you consider an Anthony Lister' mask in general a piece of Art or simply a product? Do you consider a Anthony Lister Hello Kitty mask a piece of art or simply a product?
A product can be cool and nice...But, while the lines have not always been clear in street art, they are really blurring here...
The show in MOCA (supposed to be the biggest in a museum regarding street art in general) is supposed to be partly regarding the influence of some artists on skate culture, etc. the link with hip-hop, etc.
With these Hello Kitty shows, we go from how some artists influenced some popular cullture to how some s**tty culture (or not if you like, but which was not really part of the artists backgrounds) influences a group of artists in general (if it's not exceptional)...This problem does not exist with a Ben Eine Handbag (where I don't see any problem; I don't think there is anything "edgy" in street art) ...
But, if we see many shows like that, many things like Hello Kitty stuff, I don't think that we could still say that what comes from street art in general should be more recognized as Art (by the art establishment)...indeed, maybe some are too recognized because of some actual popularity...
To summarize: -a Ben Eine handbag has to do with """street art""" being totally mainstream and popular... - this has to do with the "Art"? itself

Anthony Lister π¦πΊ Australian Contemporary Artist, by graffoto on Dec 10, 2010 17:50:17 GMT 1, Is a Kaws plastic toy Art because it's limited? Is it art when it's Spongebob.
It seems that MOCA and Kitty asked artists to give their take on Kitty - not the first time a gallery has done something like this.
Eine was comissioned to make a design for a bag, Banksy to do a Blur album cover, Lister and others to produce work based on a cartoon cat.
All sold art that was the result of these comissions
What's changed?
And yes I think the Lister Masks are Art in the same way - he was asked to create his own original art on a theme by a curator.
Nice debate though - takes the mind off a certain print....

Ideally looking for as much as I can get - but anything above Β£150 will go towards The Forces Children's Trust.
Prefer to meet up in Central London but would post to the UK at buyers cost.
Signed and numbered from an edition of 50.

Anthony Lister π¦πΊ Australian Contemporary Artist, by craigf on Feb 24, 2011 16:28:00 GMT 1, My gut feel on this piece is it is one that looks great in person, but loses its depth etc. when photographed. Not having seen the piece in the flesh its pure speculation, but knowing other works produced by Lister and that it came from Elms makes me feel that this is possibly the case. I am sure whomever gets it will be getting a very nice addition to their collection and currently for very little Β£'s!

I would say this but you are 100% right. I took countless images to try and capture the actual piece and failed. It truly is a beauty in reality and someone is going to be smiling from ear to ear when they pick this piece up unless there is a very big rush on it.
The detail is fabulous and its on a thick block of wood in a discrete JJ frame. You just pick up the detail on the bandanna and its as shiny as a big shiny thing!!!!
Sorry sales pitch over but if anyone else was at the show perhaps they could comment.
