Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 15, 2019 12:09:18 GMT 1, Why do you think doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases anymore?
I was looking back over the old Banksy Print Release Threads, and how things started to get very difficult for POW to handle those online sales. Do you think Banksy isn’t doing Print Releases now as he got just too pissed off with how crazy things were getting or was it about controlling his market by moving into canvases more? I just wonder if the releases back then were done differently and it’s was all going easy, would Banksy have carried on releasing 2 or 3 prints every year. what do you think?

Prints at his level would need a team of staff Screen printers I.t staff to manage online sales Backroom staff to pack and post Sales staff : customer service
Alot of outgoings and costs going out , where as canvases less outgoings and higher profit margins
If prints were still produced , more choice for buyers and less crazy high prices which would have a knock on effect lowering banksy prices across the board. With print prices trading high as is makes certain buyers more comfortable purchasing canvas work.

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 15, 2019 13:33:33 GMT 1, True true, it also feels a bit like Banksy has lost trust in many of the people around him over the years, so maybe he would find it hard to put a team of people together like you were saying, what he would need to start releasing prints again.

Personally, i believe it is the system which has made him forgoe print releases. Money wise i am sure he is fine. However i believe that he hates the idea of people buying his work simply to make a buck.
I truly believe he makes art for people. Whether it is to advance a cause or to shine a light on an injustice or a silly way of living life, the art is meant for people who get it. I don’t think it is or ever will be for people to make money. What happened with the Choose Your Weapon release, or at least the stories i heard, probably put him off. An ego driven artist would have thrived off that type of ravenous hunger for a piece of their art or rather their bank. For Banksy i think it was more like, eh ok, these guys care more about the value and name than the messages so i am done, back to the streets, and if my collectors care more about value than the work, then i’ll just go ahead and make the big bucks selling High value pieces to people with money and put it that money into projects i care about.
In fact, i am almost 100% positive it is not about money. I can not share why, but it happens to do with something that happened between his people and Me.
I am so sad that i had to sell my favorite one of my Banksy’s in order to pay my employees salary 2 years back. Not because of the difference in value, but because I no longer have this incredibly beautiful piece of work to gaze upon every day. However, the fact that the Banksy helped me not screw over my team makes me feel significantly less terrible about it.
Hopefully he knows this and understands that it was about my staff needing their paychecks much more than me needing his work on my wall.

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Carl Cashman on Aug 15, 2019 15:18:02 GMT 1, He stopped general releases when people turned into knobheads when they missed out, why reintroduce them after all this time ? It's more hassle than it's worth, nothing to do with having to pay someone to roll them and walk to the post office... They already do that for the VIP releases.

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Dexter Bulldog on Aug 15, 2019 15:29:38 GMT 1, Would seem like things got too big, too greedy and too desperate. Lose/lose for him to release edition prints. If he releases them at market value, he is greedy, but if he releases them cheaply at the previous 500 quid or whatever, regardless of the method, it will bring out the worst in people.
POW closes with "sale ends"....... aka "thats all (common) folks"

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 15, 2019 15:39:44 GMT 1, I was looking back at some old threads and how people were calling Banksy a sell out! right back in 2007-2008. I think that type of talk would annoy him, and make him start to disconnect from the scene. I feel sorry for him really, coz this scene is very supportive, with a very high percentage of people who seem to enjoy being nasty and knocking everything that's good.

Are You aware of a Banksy print ever having sold for less than cost?
So maybe the VIPs have got quite a bit of sense??

Nice post
Conversely one of my customers has recently folded, knocked his 5 staff that had been with him for 20 years average for 2 months wages, took about £50k of customers money and £300k in supplier debt plus HMRC taxes. he has since rented the shops that he rented to his business out for £70k a year and retired to Devon in a nice big house with duck ponds and 40 acres

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by sgolby on Aug 15, 2019 16:59:53 GMT 1, @runt, that's some real shit right there. I wish I could say people are better than that. Unfortunately all of them are not. When my partners and I shut down our store, we laid out close to 100K of our own personal funds to ensure all vendors and debts were paid as well as making sure our employees got 2 months severance. Not a standard for the US, but standard in the world of gentlemen and women. My Father always said a man who does not pay his debts is not a man but a thief. There you have it my man.

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Daniel Silk on Aug 15, 2019 19:38:02 GMT 1, With the UK Election Print Release, and the Gorillaz Print Release both failing to happen, it’s clear he wanted to release something but he’s having problems with the realities of making it all follow through.
Maybe rather than a normal release from one website or shop, it could be done by finding say 100 outlets, maybe galleries, maybe something completely different, and giving each one just 10 prints. Imagine, just an idea off the top of my head - Charity Shops? 10 prints or less distributed to every branch of a charity shop 🤓 That might work out pretty good.

Just thinking further on that 🤓 Does some type of Palestine Charity shop chain exist? 😉 maybe not? But imagine something along those lines. A charity shop release that could happen over hundreds of locations and with the money going to a cause Banksy wants to donate to, but that would also raise that charities profile massively through the media coverage 🤓

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by Fast Eddie on Aug 15, 2019 20:24:54 GMT 1, Stating the obvious, it is a matter of limited supply relative to demand that generates these issues (and prices). When it comes to prints, I still believe that Shepard Fairey's approach is what maximizes impact on fans and limits issues of scarcity and predatory behavior.
Banksy could adopt Obey's approach, but that would come at the cost of losing valuation at auction. With more supply, the subsequent price declines would reduce headlines and limit the visibility of whatever public actions he takes. That has a massive value as well.

An edition of 30 - 100, one image sent to each shop or announce the release on his web site and say that raffle tickets can be obtained at charity shops....

Why doesn’t Banksy Love Print Releases?, by JockoLad on Aug 15, 2019 22:12:35 GMT 1, Sgolby is spot on, Choose Your Weapon release killed it. People queued for hours only for a bunch of crooks to arrive at the time of release and push their way with threats to the front of the line. Prints were bought by criminals to be sold for a fast buck.
It was rotten. Great sadness on the forum that day.
Credit where credit is due, I do know that POW sorted out a bunch of APs for forum members who had been queuing and had missed out.
I think that was the turning point for Banksy. He realised there was no longer a way to safely and fairly release prints. Even online people can cheat the system.

Right, but apparently a couple of people misunderstood you, so thanks for clearing that up.
