Sweet Toof ๐ฌ๐ง London Graffiti Artist โข Burning Candy Crew, by Feral Things on Mar 11, 2016 19:03:54 GMT 1, Sorry, I've only just caught up on this thread and seen your post.ย Vanitas was a style of painting popular in Belgium and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century.ย The paintings was all about our own morality and that what really matters is the eternal ever-after and not the earthly pursuits and desires into which we put all our energies.ย The still-life below by Harmen van Steenwyck is probably my favourite painting in the National Gallery and is a fantastic example of what vanitas paintings were all about.
The pocket watch symbolises that our time on earth is finite and is running out, while the skull and the extinguished candle are central reminders of our own mortality.ย Shells were a collector's item for the rich and this empty shell is both a reminder of the hollowness of wealth and that we can't take our money with us after we die. The samurai sword is a symbol of power and that irrespective of how powerful you may become we can never defeat death.ย The books symbolise the pursuit of knowledge and the two musical instruments symbolise love of the arts (erm, I think this one's about us lot) and they're a reminder that death puts to an end all of that.ย The flute is a phallic symbol and is about as racy as those crazy Calvanists got.
Where you can now see an urn on the right hand side, Van Steenwyck originally painted the bust of a Roman emperor whose empire has long since disappeared; the serendipitous master stroke of the painting is that if you look carefully you can still see the ghostly face of the emperor.

Who will make fake Sweetoof , on a gate train lol ?! ,stop the paranoia and trust the sellers, really ! There's a "Sweet Toof/Burning Candy" bag/suitcase on ebay, Roy, that I have to say doesn't look quite right to me. I could well be wrong, but ... i will have a look ! :-) But for this one, you imagine , painting it in on a heavy door train , to carry it at home, yo sell it on eBay, to be not sure to sell it because the matter ( I love it of course but I know that most of collectors like when it fits well with their sofa erc ... All this to ( don't be sure ) get few quids ... Let me see the bag now I come back ...
Yeah , it's weird ( the b side is awful, maybe this Sweetoof wasted up to paint this suitcase... ) .. Well, the guy is from Bristol, for 70 pounds all that ?! We don't need a COA here, as for fake Banksy sign roads... Sweetoof always signs his artworks no ? Real or fake, I'd does not matter, this thing is so ugly.. Don't need a COA ( sorry Sweetoof if it's really yours but theses lips are definitely too red ) , very funny anyway ;-)

Sweet Toof ๐ฌ๐ง London Graffiti Artist โข Burning Candy Crew, by Wilson on Mar 13, 2016 20:10:48 GMT 1, Sorry, I've only just caught up on this thread and seen your post.ย Vanitas was a style of painting popular in Belgium and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century.ย The paintings was all about our own morality and that what really matters is the eternal ever-after and not the earthly pursuits and desires into which we put all our energies.ย The still-life below by Harmen van Steenwyck is probably my favourite painting in the National Gallery and is a fantastic example of what vanitas paintings were all about.
What a great post. I knew nothing about this. Thanks for the insight.

You aren't being mocked Roy. "Can't be arsed" is a colloquial way of saying "can't be bothered".
