Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by Unica on Dec 3, 2019 14:55:59 GMT 1, Anyone think the middle east show will have a print? I think there will be another print and book given the success of this one, large edition with more colour. Its a way to get money for the museum that organizes the event and himself.

Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by Gentle Mental on Dec 3, 2019 14:57:25 GMT 1, Oooh - you can’t beat the statues. I was in Shanghai Yuz. There were 10 meter tall giants - he managed to transform humour and subversive ness into awe and beauty. But the vinyl is what it is. Figurines. Even the 4ft. And for this subject matter, the sense of loss is stronger in the sketch. And I’m sure even stronger in the statues.

I remember being really underwhelmed when I saw the 4ft companion in Kid Robots London store. I think they wanted £8500 for it.
The YSP monsters were another story, they were stunning.

I seem to remember it being £6500, but looked like it had been cleaned with polish or something, and was in bad condition. I'm not sure it even had it's box.
... bargain now though

You make good points, an understanding of this show rather than just another print. I’m sure each piece has been carefully planned and linked. If the print a sketch of what he wanted to achieve, a study for the larger piece, then I imagine it will be a special piece in the KAWS pantheon. Much more interesting to have discussions like this.

Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by Happy Shopper on Dec 3, 2019 15:23:04 GMT 1, Can we talk about the image a bit ? I’ve rarely seen the drawn version of Kaws’ toy. And this sketch reveals quite a bit. The light and shade actually feel more emotive than the toy. The sense of “gone” may feel stronger in the sketch. Whadayathink? Thanks There's a sketch version of the toys on all the Open Edition boxes and packaging. This print is the same sketch as on the Gone box.
This could be the first of a series of prints, if he wanted to do that!

Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by nobokov on Dec 3, 2019 15:45:18 GMT 1, I don't know about the rest of you, but I cried when I first saw the images of the beautiful vinyl figurine on Instagram. When I received it, I wept. after the unboxing it, I balled. I don't know how I'll maintain composure when the print arrives in February. The ever so delicate shadows, the details astounding. The paper, sturdy and textured, I can imagine how it will just enhance the emotional impact of the image. Thank you Bryan, if you're reading this. Thank you 👉🙏😢

Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by Gentle Mental on Dec 3, 2019 15:46:52 GMT 1, No where near the best print ever. But interesting to stare at and think about loss and companionship - the X X eyes take on a different meaning. Usually they represent, to me, a great fuck you to the man, they represent drunk high perverted and other good stuff. The X Xs here are unusually literal - the BFF is dead. And the companion is sorrowfully shut.

The paper, sturdy and textured, I can imagine how it will just enhance the emotional impact of the image. Thank you Bryan, if you're reading this. Thank you 👉🙏😢 I cried at the thought of the damage inflicted on the environment by mankind's obsession with manufacturing, obtaining and mailing billions of non-essential yet aesthetically-pleasing items around the Earth, locked in some consumeristic death spiral, on and on until the very last human is left standing in a barren and sterile wasteland, futilely owning everything except for the companionship of life, hope for the future, and any chance of real or lasting happiness.
Ultimately, all relationships are doomed to end and there is no god. There is nothing to fear from death, as we never truly lived in the first place. We are simply matter, looking at matter, and the only thing separating us from an inanimate object is anxiety. We are anxious, the inanimate object is not. It just is. Think of that next time you look at your Kaws toy. It doesn't fear death. Nor does it seek to own you. Throw it against a wall, or notice a scuff on it that wasn't there the previous week, and you'll feel more anxiety and fear than it ever can. That's why we admire it so much. That's the quiet still of the nothingness that we covet. The calm of the unflinching night. The peace of existence without worry or pain. Oh, and the admiration of others, elevated status through ownership of material items, and the thought that when we come to sell it, it'll deffo be worth more than what we paid for it.
Yes, I've had coffee.

Kaws NGV - COMPANIONSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS, by Gentle Mental on Dec 3, 2019 16:17:07 GMT 1, Yup! It’s a status symbol. Price of a small car. Or a year’s wages. Obscene. I think art is a form of wealth tax for the insecure wannabe fool. Guilty as charged. Some of it goes to NGV which could be good. Hopefully dear Brian spend some on supporting younger unknown artists or up and coming drug lords. Mercy on our sad souls. Art is the only thing that doesn’t matter and that is why it does.

There's a sketch version of the toys on all the Open Edition boxes and packaging. This print is the same sketch as on the Gone box. This could be the first of a series of prints, if he wanted to do that! It's not the SAME Sketch on the box... Similar, but not the SAME. BOX PRINT this piece is saturated . open edition = blah. nothing more then a happy meal toy included with some chicken nugget meal. I collect limited as it makes me feel entitled. That being said the, the toy will look nice placed ( in a plastic coffin) under the framed print ( which is like being in a coffin as well.) as for the print, It would look nicer on a UNQLO OR OF ( not odd future) shirt.
