Kaws v Banksy, by Daniel Silk on Aug 21, 2019 6:30:41 GMT 1, I thought this was interesting to compare the search popularity between Kaws and Banksy and how it varies around the World. Kaws is incredibly active with his clothing and online I think he is very good at connecting and growing his following.

Kaws v Banksy, by Hairbland on Aug 21, 2019 13:04:53 GMT 1, Banksy has 6.3M IG followers, KAWS has 2.3M with far more posts. KAWS has had a stronger gallery/museum profile, arguably Banksyโs lack of internet availability leads to more mainstream press regarding his antics. Both seem to be doing well at auction although for now it seems KAWS will surpass Banksy.
Different paths, both great.

Kaws v Banksy, by Wearology on Aug 21, 2019 14:24:26 GMT 1, These 2 artists have taken a completely different approach to creating sales and media attention once they became successful - but they started off in a very similar way before they made it to becoming household names. Kaws hit the streets for many years with his Ad Disruption campaign and Banksy did the same with painting his name on anything and everything including farm animals and billboard advertisements. It seems they were both building their brand on the streets throughout the world through repetition. Once they became successful they altered their approach to continued success completely. Banksy focused on sporadic releases of prints and originals while limiting the permissible use of his imagery to a small handful of global brands such as Puma, Triple 5 Soul, The Band Blur and some obscure record labels. Banksy's social media presence seems like someone else is doing it for him and he obviously keeps his identity to a very small circle. Banksy organises large scale events such as Dismaland, Walled Off Hotel, Bristol Museum, 2015 NYC Residency & The Pet Shop. Once Kaws hit it big he partnered with volume based mega companies such as Uniqlo & Medicom, Bearbrick to sell everything from dolls to T-Shirts. Kaws posts all the time on social media himself and travels to shows and clients to keep his face and name in the limelight consistently. Kaws partners with Blue Chip International Museums to display his art supported by a merchandise release.

Kaws v Banksy, by Inknart on Aug 21, 2019 15:27:02 GMT 1, Interesting. I think I'd be more interested in Long Term search data. I love KAWS, but honestly his trajectory is exhausting. To maintain the momentum he has for the rest of his career what be quite remarkable. I don't see him just stopping anytime soon with mass releases or limited releases as he needs it to maintain hype. I think at some point there will be so much KAWS on the market it won't be as interesting to people. Banksy is much less active and has been for quite some time, with not much being released publicly.

I love KAWS, but honestly his trajectory is exhausting and so commercial. At what point is enough, enough. To maintain the momentum he has for the rest of his career what be quite remarkable. I don't see him just stopping anytime soon with mass releases or limited releases as he needs it to maintain hype. I don't necessarily agree on the latter half of what you are saying. Yes, his prices have gone absolutely batshit crazy, and it does seem like there needs to be a correction in pricing of parts of his market. However his prices have outpaced other players in the various markets he was present, for well over a decade. His Medicom toys were pricing out higher than pretty much any other vinyl toy designer in the mid to late aughts, Original Fake clothing was part of the first wave of streetwear collecting and flipping, or at least I remember it being so for the clothing. It seems as though he decides to pivot and switch gears before any of his projects becomes TOO diluted.
It seems as though he has taken a page out of the mercedes playbook:
Uniqlo - A class or Smart Cars Non Limited Releases i.e. plush, vinyl, Holiday merch, etc... - C Class Limited edition toys and objects - E class Prints and Rare edition objects - S Class Originals - Maybach
This way he trains'em young and keeps em hooked on collecting. S

Kaws v Banksy, by Smokeidaeye on Aug 21, 2019 18:41:23 GMT 1, Search volume is interesting but it is hugely influenced by media coverage of the subject as that's a key driver in public awareness. Take the dramatic spike on Kaws' timeline. I would bet it coincides with the New York Times feature on him on May 15. People see the story then search to learn more about the artist.
Kaws has arguably received more large scale media coverage since his $14+mil auction result at the start of April but for the most part Bansky has had much more consistent day-to-day coverage for the last several years (thus more name recognition by everyday people) plus many more massive spikes when he does something big like the shredding stunt.

Kaws v Banksy, by coller on Aug 21, 2019 21:48:11 GMT 1, I think a lot of this comes down to museums and auction houses fully embracing Kaws while doing what seems like everything possible to avoid embracing Banksy. That, and Kaws collaborating with every brand on the planet.
To say that I am glad Banksy did not take the Kaws route is the understatement of the year.
