BANKSY Gross Domestic Product™, by Fast Eddie on Oct 4, 2019 15:42:38 GMT 1, I'm at the store now. Obviously there's some great stuff behind the windows but absolutely the best thing about it is observing the reactions of the random cross-section of Croydon society who happen to be here with me. It is incredibly successful at catching the attention of passers-by, provoking reactions and initiating conversations between complete strangers. The security guard characters are very chatty and help to encourage this atmosphere. I can't think of another artwork/collection/installation/whatever-this-is that I have seen which has been so successful at involving people who obviously have no wider interest in art/installations/whatever-this-ises. For this reason, and even though the daylight makes it almost impossible to take decent photos, I'd encourage people if possible to come during shopping hours. No freebies though, sadly. Yes Loother agree with lots of this...am pleased to say the random conversations and people being stopped in their tracks was still happening at 10pm as I guess there are people to and from pubs and restaurants etc with no clue it was happening or indeed what it is. I haven't stopped thinking about it today and will definitely try to go down a couple more times as I am quite close. Would urge anyone an hour or so away considering it to get down there, maybe combine with a London gallery show you like. There are only 5-6 windows but there is a lot going on and a lot to take in if you are a big fan. And definitely better in the flesh than the pics. Street art - in fact, Art - at its highest. For the public and with the public. To the benefit of the weakest among us. It is harder than it looks to pull this off sincerely and credibly.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Product™, by Schrödinger's Chat on Oct 4, 2019 15:53:14 GMT 1, Probably already discussed but saw in Vice magazine the suggestion that Banksy would need to sell his merchandise soon before the copies hit the market. Two weeks gives a window for the opportunists.
Remember how quickly copies of Kate Middletons wedding dress were being knocked up in China.

Yep, everything that looks like it should go to V.I.P.'s already has. Only items I see being 'released' are the t-shirts, and 'unlimited' pieces; spray cans, Morrisey poster, etc.
The prints will be done by lotto.

Some of these items might just be 'window dressing' and may have already been sold off or given away. He may have needed a certain number of items that were for sale 'optically' to appease the courts so he could defend his brand.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Product™, by loother on Oct 4, 2019 17:27:18 GMT 1, GDP was my second Banksy-related outing of the week, following a visit to Sotheby's to see Devolved Parliament before it got sold off. The difference in demographics between Croydon and Mayfair isn't surprising but is nevertheless astonishing. I was hoping that Banksy might have dragged some of the Mayfair/Frieze set down to Croydon, but while I was there I didn't see anyone wearing a sufficiently expensive coat.
A couple of other observations: I hadn't realised the wallpaper at GDP is handpainted. Banksy seems to like painting flock wallpaper, or getting other people to. Maybe that's how he punishes any misbehaving minions.
Also, and apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but in addition to the lights being turned out there's a banana in Monkey Parliament that has been turned upside down at some point. At Sotheby's I heard someone official-looking say that DP was "believed" to be being sold by Banksy himself, and given the changes that have been made to it, the timing of its sale and the loan to Bristol museum, I'd be very surprised if that wasn't the case, whatever he says on Instagram.

There has been some Banksy pieces where the main image was stencilled and the background wallpaper was hand painted. The repetitive wallpaper would have been a great candidate for stencilling if time saving and ease was needed. The hand painting gives it a rawer unpolished look I think, that looks great and much better than the uniformity stencilling would have given
