Yoshitomo Nara ๐ฏ๐ต New Print Release โข Contemporary Art , by touchdowntodd on Oct 13, 2019 1:15:54 GMT 1, Everyone that missed out really shouldn't beat themselves up about it, let's be real for a second Nara's market is all hype, the work itself is basic and insignificant. I don't see his market hold up at these prices for too long, but there is so much dumb money in this scene now that who knows... Now I would sell anything I have of him if there wasnt a thousand more interesting artists and artworks that I preferred to acquire for my collection (why I own no works of Nara). But I would love someone to try and prove me that his work is worth what the market pays for it these days and that it is "important" art...
I'd like to hear why it's "insignificant"
It's cool to not like things, but u can't deny an artist hitting 20 million+ In auction. Not saying money is the answer, but that artist has moved past any falling off .. Nara will be in museums, like it or not. I'm very glad to have this print/litho/poster because I could never get anything else, and the print market is so full of fakes.. I enjoy the imagery, reminds me of the the dark side of childhood the same way Javi reminds me of the positive side

Another dummy who has no idea about what heโs talking about. You can have you opinion about his style of work but Nara has been collected by major collectors for years now. He has been represented by major galleries and been in museums. Heโs doesnโt need this forum or any hype to prove his value. He has more million dollar sold pieces than Banksy is collected by people from around the world. There are are a lot of haters on this forum who have no clue what they are talking about. Sad really.

I m sorry to have triggered you and that you feel the need to insult me to defend your "argument", which seems to be that "its in museums and big galleries" and "worth more than Banksy" to justify it as great significant art (the "dumb money" collectors argument).
I m not saying its bad, I like some pieces but it's just nothing that special.

Happy to discuss this further with you. Nothing against Nara per say, but beyond its financial value I dont see it being anything more interesting than many other artists who are not hyped like this. I read quite a bit about Nara and it seems like the only really interesting thing about his work is the market around it

Yoshitomo Nara ๐ฏ๐ต New Print Release โข Contemporary Art , by pada1 on Oct 13, 2019 2:46:54 GMT 1, Nara is a well recognized artist. He passed the โGodโ level in Japan for years and doing exhibition in the right national contemporary museums.
Itโs not because a few hyped-geek are after him now that he doesnโt have a solid base of collectors and museum supporting him. This poster release is like selling keychains for him and his image. If you pike his art, go to his exhibition and see the real thing.

Have seen his work before and know his story, but it seems nobody is able to explain anything special about his work. I tried researching interesting perspectives to try and appreciate Nara but cant find anything solid. People love to complain on this forum about flippers and not talking enough about the art, like they re true connoisseurs only interested in the art... But when one asks about what justifies the interest in this artist beyond market prices over many other artists, all i m hearing is that he s in big museums and galleries and I must be stupid... Again I was not meaning to insult people, just to understand things that don't make much sense to my knowledge

Yoshitomo Nara ๐ฏ๐ต New Print Release โข Contemporary Art , by pada1 on Oct 13, 2019 4:00:53 GMT 1, Your point is what beauty people see in his artwork. This is THE question without answer in our arty world :-)
For sure some people discovered the artist because they saw the mass attracted by it. Some are curious about whatโs in the artistic approach for them, some others are for investment. Both are fine in my opinion. Nothing new here.
About Naraโs approach, I am also very curious about what he does. I usually focus more on the messages, words and attitude of the character. Many Japanese artists have this childish way of designing characters. However they convey adult messages that are quite touching and often timeless. I see Nara showing us whatโs wrong through the eyes of a child. Simple messages become more powerful because I attach child feelings to them. Having children myself also helps me to relate some situation to my own experience.
Again, going to the museum gives you the opportunity and the time to think at those things. Google image, prints releases and forums arenโt the right medium.

Again I was not meaning to insult people, just to understand things that don't make much sense to my knowledge In terms of the art I think this article does a great job about why Nara focuses on simple imagery of girls, animals, and natural fauna:
www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/apr/29/yoshitomo-nara-anatomy-of-an-artwork
Many people do not like either spectrum of the Superflat artists from the stripped down emotion of Nara to the otaku of Murakami. I love both.
Art is the medium in which he explains his experience on the bomb droppings from WW2, to the current state of politics today. The child will exhibit almost all positive emotions but the facial expression tells the true story along with bandages from a devastating injury, or smoking a cigarette.
Simple doesn't mean insignificant, and complicated doesn't mean special. The pricing is the only reason I could find to not want to have every Nara piece in my home.

Yoshitomo Nara ๐ฏ๐ต New Print Release โข Contemporary Art , by sfnyc on Oct 13, 2019 6:55:01 GMT 1, @swhishhh pada1 I don't disagree on how some of Nara's work demonstrate these points, and I can see how the Japanese market went crazy for him in the 90s for these characters - but even then the prices stayed in appropriate ranges back then. But has he really evolved to anything new since then to justify his market today? It seems just the same. So I wonder how is he more significant now than he was in the 90s according to the art market? Or is he just collected more like an artistic token of the 90s in Japan? Because I feel its just another artist pushed through the art market machine via the same gallerists/museum/auctions hype process telling us he is important just because the other said so...

It seems your definition of "special" is more around the justification of the pricing. Pick your poison of Jonas Wood, KAWS, or Nara and take it up with the Mugrabi families of the world as to how/why personal collections, gallerists, and auction houses all have shared interest in creating inflated artist pricing.
Nobody told me to like anyone, but it would be foolish to say that value plays no interest in ones acquisition of art. I think the market pricing, and vitriol of those who missed this release speaks just as much to the demand as it does to "why" it exists.
The answer you are looking for doesn't seem to exist, however, because you can use the "why is this worth that" argument from Banksy to Warhol. I believe the art is good, you do not. It boils down to mostly that, but as to "why" he is popular and the market exists as it does, there is all the information you need in this thread alone to discern that.
You also mentioned evolution which I imagine refers to style. Here is 90's vs current Nara

Here is 90's vs current Nara So it looks like a 10 year old drew it instead of a 7 year old. We are all entitled to our opinions, and mine is that Nara is a more skilled artist than anyone in this forum is at whatever in the world they think they are best at. Nara is a more masterful artist than any forum member, myself included, is at any skill or trade they feel most confident in. Gotta love the comments.
Medvedev is playing so i'm good here.

The lot essay for the previous record, Looking at You, probably explains his work and therefore, appeal, better. If you don't like or get the appeal, that's cool.

Yoshitomo Nara ๐ฏ๐ต New Print Release โข Contemporary Art , by Deleted on Oct 14, 2019 6:36:36 GMT 1, He studied at Kunstakademie Dรผsseldorf, which is one of the most famous art schools in the world. Also ironically, the artist everyone hypes and hypes, Javier Calleja, on this site apprenticed with Nara and clearly took his style.
