Banksy 'Vanity Fair' Portrait - Ltd Ed. 10, by Winter on Oct 5, 2019 8:43:01 GMT 1, Thought this should at least be mentioned on here. A Portrait of Banksy by photographer Tim Walker is part of a new show later this month. It was taken for Vanity fair in 2007 - a collaboration between Banksy and the photographer. Being released soon in quite a small edition of 10. Tim Walker currently has a solo show at the V&A and has taken portraits of quite a few artists including Hockney, Grayson Perry and a great one of Alexander McQueen.
I thought only Chris Levine was the only Banksy portrait out there. His sold at Sotheby's for £35k with an edition of around 30 being released some point soon.

Banksy 'Vanity Fair' Portrait - Ltd Ed. 10, by gd79 on Oct 5, 2019 13:42:05 GMT 1, Sorry, I meant it's not on the price list o have seen. It may well be on display, and perhaps added to the selling list. I will check in any case as it's a great image. He's so good though that there are plenty that are better. Everything is either 10 or 15k from memory. There is definitely something on the 23rd, I've booked a babysitter!

Even if he used a plastic cow I’m pretty sure you’d still have a similar comment...About how it affects the environment maybe?

Lol no not really.
Although plastic is bad for the environment.
But seriously how in 2019 does this not even get a second look.

Which is a valid position. Doesn’t move my needle even after spending years working with exotic animals.

Oh yes that one too. Imagine if an artist did that now. And in current norms 10-20 years ago is now also. It’s just interesting how it hasn’t come up.

Check out James Pfaff’s portraits of B. He took the Monkey Mask one in Wall and Piece (which is also the portrait of B held by the NPG) and the pixelated canvas portrait in Wall and Piece. Available for considerably less than 10k! www.jamespfaff.com/store

Banksy 'Vanity Fair' Portrait - Ltd Ed. 10, by gd79 on Oct 6, 2019 18:22:34 GMT 1, It raises an interesting question though - to what extent is this a work by banksy?
Clearly not 100%, it's signed by Tim Walker after all. At the same time, it's also clear that Banksy was at least partially responsible for the composition and fully responsible for the subject. I presume there was also some kind of creative oversight.
And how would that change if it was co-signed?

Although they collaborated on this image in some way the credit goes to the photographer. As I mentioned before he has taken portraits of other artists who I would imagine recognise the talent of the person taking the picture. I know Terry O’Neill sells photos signed by artist and subject but apart from him I can’t think of any.

I agree. With one caveat - this photo includes a banksy work that only exists in this photo. Assuming no animals were harmed in the making! Or pickled. This makes it something more than either a portrait or a record of the piece.

This Rural Art from 12 years ago impresses me more than so much of the Urban Art we see today.
From a conceptual standpoint, however, I would still have advised the artist to up his game. Greater impact could have been achieved by painting 'Wild Style' on a lion or rhino, instead of on domesticated livestock.
__________
Does anybody know what was sprayed on the second Holstein in the background?
__________
Input by Tim Walker and Banksy in the creation of this image has already been discussed.
But I am surprised that the contributions of the cows themselves haven't yet been mentioned here. In my view, these professionals (especially the one in the foreground) deserve more credit. They aren't just excellent models — they are out standing in their field.
