What price are these now ?

New release by Michael Kagan. Very different from earlier releases, I think I like this new style. A “slightly” different price range though.

Critical Mass combines a large-scale screenprint on Somerset Tub Sized Satin White 600gsm paper with a 3 layer monoprint, hand-applied in viscous blue and white ink and finished with several layers of UV varnish.

I was eying that release since last year.
The price really surprised me, I think even half of that would be pushing it.

Just for the record, this isn’t a „new“ style, its his early style.
Google Michael Kagan Mavericks to get an idea.

It’s a beautiful edition, not doubting that.
Maybe even argue it’s almost an OG because of the uniqueness and other factors… (but it’s not)

With that small edition size I’m sure it will be sold out before release.
But at that price point im starting to think what else could be bought for 8K

I'm a big fan of his, but to me, these are a hot mess with too many surfers and the base layer seems to show off the halftone dots prominently. I would've preferred an inkjet base to get rid of those dots.

I'm glad he's trying a move away from the endless line of astronauts, but I would've preferred that he himself apply the abstract layers. Based on the video, the printer's seemed to be the ones that applied those layers rather than Kagan since they filmed him seeing the finished prints for the first time.

To me, he's a figurative artist known for the abstract quality of the Richter-like marks so if someone else is creating the abstractions, it's just not the same. Just like how those astronaut toys and giant sculpture are soulless without his personal abstract mark making.

Price point is high but the image is huge and from what I can see there’s a lot of work gone into such a small edition...

I’m sure this will sell out pre-release so pricing is fair...

Anyone willing to lend me the money on a very long term basis at 0% is more than welcome to pop round occasionally for a 5 min viewing....!
