Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by Deleted on Oct 26, 2019 8:22:01 GMT 1, I have a theory about this Banksy shop - read the fine print. They mention "refund" several times in the terms and conditions
The terms state the items can take up to 5 months to get it after purchase. It also states they won't send a certificate of authenticity until the 2nd year anniversary after purchase 🤣🤣🤣
Also a clever way to keep people from reselling the items for a quick profit Although all this could just be a way to protect what he's doing legally because there will be so much interest.
But I feel like people will be waiting on items for months then he'll just say nevermind and refund everybody their money. It does say on front page: You are advised that GDP may prove to be a disappointing retail experience - especially if you’re successful in making a purchase. Banksy mugging them off 👌

That would be so Banksy! Just imagine the interest he would bank. 🙄 Jesus. People are reading into these terms far too much.

It would open him up to all sorts of legal issues if he took money for products he doesn't stock and has no intention of stocking.

Then banksy says your not having it making a complete mare for the flipper. When that happens I will get the popcorn.

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by moron on Oct 26, 2019 20:06:54 GMT 1, Shame that the OP's post got attacked by people who only criticise and never debate on here. Such a knee jerk reaction because someone asked if the artwork had a six sided star deliberately included in the design and did it suggest an Israeli star? That is how conspiracy theories work most of the time. For me personally the six sided star in the design makes me think of the six sided star in the US sheriffs badge. As in hiding from the law and doing graffiti.
The Banksy display of the spirit level and wooden pallets and life jackets stacked like a pyramid.
Something something something masonic ?
Is Banksy on the level?

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by pellets on Nov 6, 2019 10:15:15 GMT 1, This is my response to goodfish from the main GDP page:
After reading the Amsterdam Street Art article that was posted a few pages back on the main page I definitely got the feeling that it could be possible that all purchases would be refunded as the point of the shop was to be able to make an argument in the on going legal case rather than because Banksy actually wants to open a new shop.
If delivery is supposed to take 3-5 months, this could just be how long it is expected to take the legal case to be resolved. Once he’s won the case he may just refund all of the buyers or perhaps only a very small number of each item was made so the orders will be fulfilled but not in the volumes expected. This would line up with the whole ‘itll be disappointing especially if you make a purchase’ thing. The T&Cs are open enough that Banksy can basically do whatever he wants. (Though my conspiracy theory would leave out the LW mats because that is actually trying to raise funds for charity and the purchases were through the LW website)
Or it could just be that the disappointing part is how long delivery will take and the additional sales agreement people have to sign up to on the limited editions which may require re-sale only to bBay or PC.
But while i had the above thought, it just doesnt make sense to me. This seems like the most convoluted way of setting up a shop if you werent planning on fulfilling the orders. Wouldnt it have been easier to pull a central park type stunt in croydon with a shop that was only open (actually open) for a very brief period of time. Could this relate to the “this isnt a proper shop its an actual shop” thing? Maybe certain criteria must be met for the shop to meet the terms needed in the legal case.
Personally, Im hoping this is just round one of multiple opportunities to make a purchase. Given how much everyone loves Banksy it would be nice if they could own a small unlimited piece. And if my theory above is correct, then Im basically saying Banksy is serving his own legal needs at the expense of his fans, which doesn’t sound like a very Banksy thing to do.
In conclusion, i reckon its all legit and everyone will get what they want but i love the craic of talking about conspiracies! Hope y’all also have some crazy theories to discuss!
P.s. there has been a lot of chat about how it was a great idea and clearly many years in the making (based on when the GDP company and domain were set up). But the following make me doubt this: 1. The shop had opened apparently in response to a legal case, this surely cant have been planned for years (or i suppose you could have planned the strategy and then been waiting until the day you had to use it) 2.The website seemed to be under construction until the last minute (though i know nothing about computers and am only going by what people on the forum said) 3. Not all of the products are ready to be produced/shipped, e.g. the tiger rug or goldfish. 4. The T&Cs have been less than clear (going by the amount of discussion) and i think 3 different time frames were given for how long it’ll take to hear if you won.

The mats would have raised c.£250k but i have no idea what a boat costs. But also Banksy has been quoted as saying “The proceeds from these products will go toward buying a new migrant rescue boat...” on ArtNet news. It doesn’t necessarily say hes gonna buy a boat outright, just the proceeds will go towards a boat.
But i agree with you, i think its all legit and trying to raise the maximum funds for a great cause.

Realistically, only 100k max applied, give or take, for wives and mistresses coerced into it

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by goodfish on Nov 7, 2019 2:09:46 GMT 1, Banksy is now officially a brand and what do brands do...milk the brand until it is no longer profitable. A lot of money and investment is poured into an artist that essentially has unlimited life span. Forget about worrying about what an edition is out of this brand you can't even tell you who he is, when he'll be dead or get into a proper museums collections. Banksy could run for another 200 years as the precious club of exclusivity gets more and more watered down. Just hand it over to the next person with a pencil who can write 5 letters. The reality is this is good fun. Treat it as such and youll be better off because that's all it is. But please don't miss the other artists you bump into that are within his circle Dave King (RIP). Why the blind trust in a brand that is built around fooling you? Interesting thought. Especially in light of this article: creativefolk.co.uk/will-the-real-banksy-please-stand-up/
Those prints she shows don't really look like Banksy's to this untrained eye though...

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by goodfish on Nov 7, 2019 2:32:59 GMT 1, This is my response to goodfish from the main GDP page: After reading the Amsterdam Street Art article that was posted a few pages back on the main page I definitely got the feeling that it could be possible that all purchases would be refunded as the point of the shop was to be able to make an argument in the on going legal case rather than because Banksy actually wants to open a new shop. (Though my conspiracy theory would leave out the LW mats because that is actually trying to raise funds for charity and the purchases were through the LW website) Or it could just be that the disappointing part is how long delivery will take and the additional sales agreement people have to sign up to on the limited editions which may require re-sale only to bBay or PC. Sorry for the double post, but I only just caught up with this thread. Spent my morning reading the 20 new pages to the GDP thread...
Interesting theories, 8 pellets. However, I think Banksy's central message is a positive one of hope (albeit covered in irony), so I can't imagine he would purposely hoodwink so many of his devoted disciples. A bit of disappointment is on offer (maybe the wait-time as you suggest), but I don't think he's offering dispair. I think it's more along the lines of trying to weed out the flippers and phonies and maybe do a few more background checks on his customers.
I'm still interested to see what the people who got the unlimited items like the cans, the mugs or the T-shirts end up with. The price range for those items were at the attainable level for most people who like his work. If you follow the rules, and only choose one item, then the people who went for those items are perhaps the most genuine? If they take the product description at face value, then they know the item is unlimited, so they're not choosing it to get rich. They're just choosing it because they like it and can afford it. It wouldn't surprise me if those items come with a bonus, eg. "Here's the can. I used it to create this painting..." Something like that would be epic, and really in line with Banky's modus operandi. What do you think?
I went for the Hope Floats T-shirt as a birthday gift for my girlfriend. If I apply the can theory to my purchase, then...I don't know.

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by pellets on Nov 7, 2019 9:54:15 GMT 1,
I agree with what you said above. It wouldnt make sense to be mean to your fans.
It would be very cool if the ‘unlimited’ items came with a lil something extra. But also, its awesome that there is anything official being offered at such a low price point so no one is going to be sad to receive ‘only’ the item they purchased.
The unique/unusual nature of the whole project has given people more entertainment and engagement than most artists normally achieve. I’ve read articles criticising Banksys work for not being super deep, etc. and while im not an art critic, his work seems to be super accessible. You dont need to spent 10 years studying brush technique and colour theory to like his work and the messages often relate to things in every day life that people can relate to. I think that annoys the traditional art world because its harder for them to spin the usual etherial web of around the artists intentions/meaning.
Im interested to see where this project ends up as it defo feels like this is just the beginning!
(Also, i know we’ve been have a bit of an exchange here, but there are SO many people on here who know LOADS more than me. Im still relatively new to all of this!)

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by goodfish on Nov 7, 2019 14:04:39 GMT 1, Yeah, you're right about about the unlimited items. Everyone who gets something is stoked.
I agree, most modern art is crap and a lot of the old stuff is boring. Who wants to have a picture of a sappy-faced mope with a weird smile on their wall? Banky's is fun, accessible, looks good on a wall and creates so much engagement and theatre around it. Look at Better Out Than In, Dismaland, the shredded painting, etc. His work is fun and exciting on it's own, but then the viewing public become part of the art itself. Also, there are a lot of times when he really hits the zeitgeist and creates some thought-provoking pieces.

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by pellets on Nov 7, 2019 18:41:09 GMT 1, This is probably wrong simply because the EU style of date is DD MM YY but what if the 11:08 reference on the clock is tomorrow?
Haha, you cant just set it up. You have to tell us what will happen! If it did mean tomorrow, what will be the big reveal?

If it did mean tomorrow, what will be the big reveal? Zero clue. Hahahaha. My conspiracy theory is that 11:08 on the clock alludes to some kind of big reveal that will take place on November 8. Maybe also something as simple as the store changing over or them releasing the winners clever answers.
Hopefully the big reveal will be that I've bagged a Banksquiat grey 🤣
Couple of people entered on the first day, I did too...but I entered late that day. I wonder if the timeslots are big or small, or if they even exist.

Conspiracies & Theories: Banksy gross domestic product™, by goodfish on Nov 7, 2019 22:07:01 GMT 1, Most clocks and watches in shops are set at 10:10 for aesthetic reasons. It shows the hands off clearly without overlapping, it shows symmetry which is pleasing to the eye, the date is not obscured, and the logo is clear. I think Banksy chose that time to be a bit off kilter and let the rat have room to stretch its legs...
