Banksy Welcome Mat, by davidokaw2017 on Nov 18, 2020 4:46:25 GMT 1, I think it looks great. The ornate frame adds to the irony. The strap hanging out is clutch.
Adds to the irony or is in complete bad taste? Putting something made by refugees in a frame that would sit well in a stately home?

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2020 7:35:56 GMT 1, I think it looks great. The ornate frame adds to the irony. The strap hanging out is clutch. Adds to the irony or is in complete bad taste? Putting something made by refugees in a frame that would sit well in a stately home? Don't agree with your reasoning here. The fact it's made by refugees does not mean it demands some faux humble framing (which still costs a lot of money).
Think this framing is excellent for two reasons:
- Because it looks very traditional and museum-y, it immediately says, 'This is a piece of art'. It makes you instinctively engage with it as a piece of art and focus on the welcome text and what it's made of, partly because the end of the life jacket is hanging out of the frame. It makes you think about what it means. A lot of the others look like door mats stuck on the wall. The first thought on seeing them is, 'Why is this door mat on the wall?' The meaning becomes secondary to the awkward presentation.
- There's something knowing about the presentation. We can all pretend that we want to buy this mat purely to help a good cause, but we wouldn't buy it for £500 if it wasn't by Banksy. There's an honesty and irony to framing it very traditionally and a bit ostentatiously. It says, 'I like this piece and its meaning, but also I get that wanting to display it means I view this as a status symbol. I am both part of the solution and part of the problem. I accept that.' Think that's quite fitting for Banksy.

Think there have either been 3 or 4 drops since the Banksy GDP event (about 2,000 mats in total, I think). They send out links, some in order of sign-up and some at random. Usually 500 mats and about 1000 links go out, so you have to be quick as you can buy up to two per link. Not heard of another drop coming as yet, but it can't hurt to sign up.

They are not the first edition, but I believe that in the long run nobody will care that much. Maybe, maybe not. Looking at the "sold" listings over the past month or so, the first edition mats are going for 2-3x later batches. This was from a cursory glance, but there's a meaningful bump in value.

Agreed, the only reason I could think of is that people still hope the first batch will get some kind of COA. I can’t think of anything else that would explain the price difference. Once people realise, it’s not going to happen, the prices should get much closer.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Baker Dave 76 on Nov 20, 2020 20:17:41 GMT 1, Got my mat framed and I’m quite happy with it Nice idea but the frame does not compliment the mat at all. An ornate frame takes away from the meaning of the piece. The contrast between the colours is also way off
It looks great how it's framed , but I think Banksy wanted us to look at the the clasped on the life jacket and may be think about it .

Totally agree. The price difference is utterly irrational and when the dust settles and the final edition numbers are in (2500) then I doubt anyone will care. Pest Control have stated that NO COA will be issued so frankly it's pissing into the wind buying one for 5k when a later edition can be had for 2k.
With that said. I've heard that this will be a final run of 2500. Watch out for one more release next month then it's over.

IMO, first edition will be considered 'best' and premium will grow. I see an unsigned vs. signed print type distinction emerging eventually.
Whenever there is a 'best' form, be it first-edition book, MS70 graded coin, CGC 10 graded comic, etc., premiums get paid by collectors to own that best.
(I do not own a first edition mat, have no financial stake in one, etc. Just personal opinion)
