Customs don’t care about art and history. They are checking and make them - us - paying.

I've never even received a teaser raffle email and then missed the opportunity to purchase one - that seems to happen often enough.
I did make the delightful misstep of being on-line on the Love Welcomes website the night they released them originally and they were available. I thought, "Ouch 500 GBP, I better consult the Mrs. in the morning before I buy one." She's not all that down with B.
The insult added to the injury, the GBP has gotten 15-20% stronger since then. The only bonus here is no import tax until you breech 800 in value.

A little jaded, a month after receiving the Banksy Love Welcomes Mat I received a letter from Fedex inviting me to pay 15 euros for administrative fees + 32 euros for import VAT and 3 euros corresponding to the VAT on 20% administration fees (!). .. but I'm happy to have this fabulous piece

Taxes came from the middle age to cross a « road « in a forest or to pay salt : going back to the taxes is absolutely a nonsense and a return to the past ! Germany that has low taxes ( 5 or 8 % - only 4€50 for a pack of fags, no taxes for the municipalities, is the richest country, I mean not much no inequality between people..

What they might have done is sorted it so that if a 500GBP donation was made, the donor received a Welcome mat as a gift, with a nominal value attached to it. Sorted this way, there wouldn't be import taxes and VAT taxes involved (potentially) AND the donor would be allowed to subtract 500GBP from their taxable income (I am extrapolating our tax law to EU/UK which I don't know the particulars of). I don't think it's greedy to look at it this way. The money saved could be used for other charitable causes or whatever else. I'm not diminishing B by viewing it this way, I am more being objective and saying that a government or economic system may not necessarily see this as 'art'. I see it as however is most economically advantageous to you (assuming it is all legally acceptable). Maybe they looked at doing it this way and I am wrong...
By the time you have earned the money to pay for the Welcome mat, paid taxes on those earnings, and then paid these import/ VAT taxes, the big winner is the tax authorities. LW gets 500GBP and the taxing authorities have gotten ~700GBP.

We have it in my daughter's bedroom near her crib. Even if I never get picked for the mat, glad I found the charity and bought this, at least!

That would definitely drive a wedge between the different versions.
