Banksy Welcome Mat, by eyectopus on Jul 23, 2021 17:11:10 GMT 1, Are you guys saying the more recent ones have paint on them to achieve the effect? FWIW early batch on left, most recent on right. A huge difference in terms of how bright the vest portion is on the first in comparison to the most recent, which has a ton more dirt, sand etc, which causes the difference. I kind of like the most recent one more; a weathered and shitty looking welcome mat seems much more Banksy’esque to me. I’m giving one of these to a family member as a bday gift. Trying to decide which one to keep.
I'd keep the weathered one. If the family member isn't a big Banksy fan they may rather the brighter one as it stands out, is a bit fresher looking and may display better. The other one has more elements that suggest the history and origins of the mats. However, both look great and are just the variations to be expected in handmade items using these materials.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by eyectopus on Jul 23, 2021 17:18:00 GMT 1, I some people still question displaying these mats. I am finding that visitors to my home ask about it. Family members that would not have any interest in art have taken an interest in it, they only other piece where visitors and family showed as much interest is an Obey HPM.
What are others people experience from displaying the mats?

Great points, bud. I totally agree. The brighter one is the one to gift.

I have mine in front of my double doors leading out to my backyard. Last time my parents came by to visit, my mom ended up stepping on and resting one foot on the mat. I cringed a bit, but didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to explain why I had a $1500 floor mat on the ground😂. Luckily, she took her foot off it it after about 10 seconds.

Also, I don't recall seeing one that weathered before which could be another reason for holding on to that one.

When artworks and functional objects get confused 🙂 While not an artwork I treat a Julian Opie tray as one in my kitchen. A few times now it was picked up to be used by family and I have had to ask them not to use it. I'm sorry I didn't get a 2nd one to be used.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by apprint on Jul 23, 2021 18:35:34 GMT 1, They have like fake pain on it, to make those look used when they are not I think you're actually right here. I just checked mine and there is "mud" over the stitching, which suggests it was added after it was sewn onto the mat.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by vvk on Jul 23, 2021 21:34:08 GMT 1, oh man, im hoping this is not true . i guess i better take a closer look 2 theis new one. was for my bros bday. but now i might just have to use it as a ... well you guessed it a welcome mat I like mine that way...it add to the story. If you don't want it muddy, just wash the mud away with a wet cloth. So dramatic... just to be clear, Im fine with the OG mud . Im just creeped out with the "painted / added" mud for Effect. the story of these is horible enough, except for the fact that they take a negative and make it a positive.
But adding dirt for the effect is just wrong.

Mines got loads of dirt on it. I love it.
I just need to decide how to frame it. Biggest question, glass or no glass?

The "OG mud" is also paint. I have one of the first batch. It looks realistic but it's definitely paint. They just seem to have been more liberal with it for the newer ones.

If you've hidden the tag when framed, has it been removed or just wrapped around the back of the mat?
I can't see any string in any of the examples...

Come back to this post in 5 years. These will be fetching a shit ton more once the supply is confirmed to be dried up. We’ll be kicking ourselves for not swooping on them at just above 1k. Love it or hate it, it’s arguably one of B’s most thought provoking pieces and something other than a print. They’ll fetch a lot in the future, regardless of the run/number. Not saying they’ll hit print prices/six figures, but they’ll definitely go up considerably imho.

It would really be nice if someone could invent a way to where love welcomes Could somehow get a % of the sale every time these got resold. Similar to what happens with these new nft’s.. it would be a win win for everyone. Especially the refugees. Imagine if the documented who made which one. Then every time it sold the refugee that made that mat maybe would get a % of the resale. It would be like a life changing lottery for the deserving. The blockchain is comming to everything! And software is eating the world.
