New U.S tax on prints photos e.t.c October 18th, by Happy Shopper on Oct 28, 2019 16:48:16 GMT 1, Does anyone know what the rough customs charges from China to the uk for a piece that is valued at £300? I know there’s a thread somewhere but I can’t find it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Q. 20% of value plus shipping cost usually (doesn't matter where it's coming from, as far as I know... except the EU obviously, which is free at the moment).
But if it can be considered an "artwork", rather than a mass produced poster, and handmade by the artist, then it can be claimed to be 5%.

Do you normally pay the full import fee then apply for a refund?

New U.S tax on prints photos e.t.c October 18th, by mose on Oct 28, 2019 22:37:28 GMT 1, Many of Trumps tariffs have been reversed/relaxed pretty quickly once its realised that they’re more detrimental to the US. So hopefully this wont last long. This is from a WTO decision regarding the EU illegally subsiding Airbus, not a 'Trump tariff'

Yes, usually that’s how you have to do it. With some couriers it’s possible to get it corrected before you pay, but most charge you after they’ve already paid it, and it’s too late!

Agreed, but isn’t it up to Trump (and/or his administration) how they allocate the impact of that WTO decision? As in, they didnt need to have a tariff on art and i didnt need to be of this magnitude.
(But im fully willing to be wrong here, sounds like you defo might know more about this than i do!)

New U.S tax on prints photos e.t.c October 18th, by mose on Oct 29, 2019 5:05:55 GMT 1, "The tariffs will be applied to a range of imports from EU Member States, with the bulk of the tariffs being applied to imports from France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom – the four countries responsible for the illegal subsidies. Although USTR has the authority to apply a 100 percent tariff on affected products, at this time the tariff increases will be limited to 10 percent on large civil aircraft and 25 percent on agricultural and other products. The U.S. has the authority to increase the tariffs at any time, or change the products affected."
Actually could have been much more. US is going light at the moment.

I've now had two prints shipped in from Europe to the US since this tariff was implemented and I was not charged a duty for either print. Standard size and rolled in a tube. Dunno exactly what they look for or if it's based on declared value or what (I think both prints declared value was under $250).

New U.S tax on prints photos e.t.c October 18th, by Someones Brain on Nov 26, 2019 19:51:04 GMT 1, Okay, now that everything seems clear here's the next question: What happens if a German or UK seller finds an intermediary (outside Germany, but inside the EU) who does the art sale/shipping to the US? There is free movement of goods and capital within the EU, so what should stop an art dealer in one of the two EU countries to circumvent the US tariffs by finding a partner in another EU country. The additional work might be okay at least when more pricey art is sold.

Look into temporary imports paperwork, used commonly for auctions where the art comes from other countries
