Prepaid VISA cards, by christiangul on Oct 23, 2019 19:49:55 GMT 1, Hello forumites. Anyone have recommendations for a prepaid VISA card to use around the world? I'm looking for a card that would let me transfer money to every now and then, and let the balance grow until I find something I would purchase with it.
Important things are; - No/low monthly cost - Secure/reputable distributor - No transaction cost when using abroad - The possibility to get the money out of the card again if necessary - My name not linked to the card in any way
I've seen mycard2go as one provider. Would like to hear if someone have used these kind of cards and any experience.

... I suppose the biggest issue is that the OP does not want his identity linked with the card ...

Could do master card also. Sorry, just forgot to mention. The main purpose for this card is to be able to transfer money to the card whenever the exchange currency is at a “good level”. So when I travel and want to use it I’m not necessarily purchasing thing at crap rate AND get charged 2,5 % on top.
The criteria of my name linked to the card came out a bit wrong.... my name could be on the card, but I would like to use a foreign provider, not my local country. PayPal would be perfect, but they don’t have a card, and their rates suck.

Prepaid VISA cards, by Winter on Oct 24, 2019 8:44:09 GMT 1, Hate Revolut, had nothing but problems and serious stress. Every time I used them and I mean every time they would freeze my money and ask me to send proof of funds - banks statements, annual tax returns, invoices etc. While you do this you can’t communicate with them so you don’t know when your money will be released to the person you’re paying and worse, you can’t communicate to the person waiting for the money when they might get paid. Not good news if there’s a chance a deal could fall through. Hideous company.

If you start moving anything but chump change they will freeze everything
Their fraud detection abilities are awful, with false positives galore and no support whatsoever
As much as it hurts to say this, they made me love traditional banks again

Prepaid VISA cards, by gd79 on Oct 24, 2019 8:57:53 GMT 1, I have found Revolut very good, but have never needed to speak to an actual human. It is clearly not as automated as they lead you to believe though. I topped the card up with a large sum to cover a holiday villa rental and spending. The Revolut card worked fine, but it took 3 weeks for the money to actually leave my main bank account. I had started to think my holiday had been free!
Ultimately, in response to the OP question, you'll struggle to get all of that in one card. All the tasty FX features are essentially loss leaders, in the hope that they will one day sell you an insurance product, or a fund or something. The chance of that is minimal if you are overseas, or if they don't have your name. So no point giving you the FX benefits. Hence the really anonymous cards guage your eyes out with fees - they have to make the card profitable standalone.
Anti-Money Laundering is also SUCH a big deal for banks now. And regardless of the intent, these kind of products are a very grey area. Probably more hassle to sell than they are worth

Prepaid VISA cards, by christiangul on Oct 24, 2019 9:58:27 GMT 1, Thanks for all the good input! I have some companies to look into now.
Regarding the issue that Revolut is using a long time to send the money out and their anti fraud system is bad; If I alert them in advance of a big purchase at a certain shop, they would be able to “open” the card right?
I don’t care if the recipient doesn’t get the money before 3 weeks after I swipe the card, as long as the recipient gets a “transaction cleared” on their terminal so I can leave the shop with the gods....

Prepaid VISA cards, by ashley123 on May 18, 2023 0:35:00 GMT 1, I've recently opened an indigo card. Actually, I have two cards from this bank, prepaid and credit. The last one is good for building credit. And I'm going to use the prepaid one for international travel soon. According to these indigo card reviews, people successfully use it for this purpose.
