OKLA focuses on the artistโs Oklahoma rootsโhis family, his upbringing, and his discovery of his calling as an artist. An exhibition celebrating French artist Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985), one of the most singular and provocative voices in postwar modern art.
Brutal Beauty champions Dubuffetโs rebellious philosophy. Railing against conventional ideas of beauty, he tried to capture the poetry of everyday life in a gritty, more authentic way. This is the first major survey of his work in the UK for over 50 years, showcasing four decades of his career, from early portraits and fantastical statues, to butterfly assemblages and giant colourful canvases. Dubuffet endlessly experimented and was clear on his purpose:
โArt should always make you laugh a little and fear a little. Anything but boreโ.
Alongside his own work, the exhibition features works from Dubuffetโs collection of Art Brut (a phrase he coined, which translates literally as โraw artโ). Acquired throughout his life, these works, and the artists that created them, profoundly impacted his approach to the making and meaning of art.

A rare masterpiece by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec will be presented at auction on 29th June. Entitled Une opรฉration par le Docteur Pรฉan ร lโHรดpital International, this work was realised in 1891 and offered by the artist to his doctor Frรฉdรฉric Baumgarten. It is an exceptional testimony to the hospital environment of the time, with which the artist was familiar. Exhibited only once in 1914, this artwork is an important rediscovery, as unique in its exclusivity on the art market as in its subject.

I love Huma Bhabha's work. I think her sculptures are amazingly powerful. When The Aldrich had a benefit sale I was very lucky and managed to get a cheeky small hand finished polaroid original for a mere 100 pounds :-)
