Vladimir Serov (Russian, 1910โ1968), V.I. Lenin proclaims Soviet power
The setting for this work is Smolny Palace, Petrograd (then capital of Russia) on the night of 7 November 1917 at the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies. It follows the carefully-timed armed insurrection which had begun earlier in the day in Petrograd โ by the Bolsheviks against the Russian Provisional Government led by Alexander Kerensky.
Serov painted at least three versions of this October Revolution piece. The original in 1947 depicted Joseph Stalin, Felix Dzerzhinsky and Yakov Sverdlov standing on the tribune behind Lenin. That painting was considered so important it was gifted by Soviet officials to Mao Zedong.
Following the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1956, during which the personality cult and dictatorship of Stalin were denounced by Khrushchev, Serov was apparently ordered to exclude Stalin and the other leaders in future paintings of the scene, and to replace them with representatives of the working people.

Not sure about the title of the piece, though it might be called Riot.   __________ Regarding the inspiration for that initial painting, it could be any number of riot scenes in a large city. Looking however at the architecture, the style of street furniture (such as the traffic lights, signage, and 'Keep Left' traffic bollard *), and the clothing worn by the rioters (including a baseball cap and an Adidas tracksuit), my guess is that the source photo(s) was/were shot in the UK and probably around the 1990s โ as opposed to Paris in May 1968. Although not an exact fit (even when taking into account changes to the cityscape over the last two decades), the background buildings do remind me of London's Square Mile โ near the Royal Exchange, the Bank of England and Mansion House. A local skateboarder passed away and his friends set up a lil shrine at the skatepark. Someone put this poster/advertisement there as a part of it. I don't know what it is advertising or where it is from but I recognized the image immediately.

They have a lot of problems in that area to grant eachother the light in their eyes.

But I visited and took in the information helpfully provided in the museum at the WOH about this matter and, subsequently, acquired a very informative book about the conflict by Ian Black called 'Enemies and Neighbours', which is a very balanced view and thorough reflection of all that has been going on between all parties involved in this ongoing conflict since the creation of the State of Israel. Moreover, I listened to the talk last evening at the Massive Attack festival, which was also very much on point and up to date. |
