Should POW undertake a print cull? , by irf2112 on Nov 7, 2006 11:18:20 GMT 1, Mr. James "KLF" Cauty has a site where he sells his prints. Every so often he has a print cull (3rd one happening on the 9th). Whereby certain prints are 'culled' I'm assuming they're destroyed. Thus for example a print run of 100 with say 29 sold and the rest 'culled' would mean the remaining 71 would be destroyed. Obviously a warning is given - so one can make a purchase prior to the cull. However, 'culling' is random so you dont know what will be deleted. Sure, it might be a short term money spinner. But it also ensures fresh prints are introduced.
So on POW - that would mean prints hanging around for ages are discontinued. Mind you Cauty is a lot more unpredictable.

Should POW undertake a print cull? , by sputnikeye on Nov 7, 2006 11:30:43 GMT 1, I think Cauty and the Aquarium prints to demand, so there are effectively no prints lying around or destroyed, the number of the print run is the print last sold before deletion.

Should POW undertake a print cull? , by Curley on Nov 7, 2006 11:31:07 GMT 1, It really works well on the Cauty stuff but thats probably because he does so many different designs. The fun then is trying to work out whats selling the least so that when the cull comes it becomes the rarest piece. I dont see how that would work so well for POW. Banksy prints sells out and therefore a cull will never happen. And according to POW website every print has sold out eventually.

Should POW undertake a print cull? , by mido on Nov 7, 2006 11:59:47 GMT 1, at last, a thread where people are talking sense, and giving real info.
yes, Aquarium stuff is done mainly to demand, so they never have huge stocks of prints etc lying around. whereas POW do do large screenprint runs and do often have stock on the shelves...
I love the unpredictability of Jimmy's stuff. the numbers, the prices, the culls. It makes it all rather funny and non-sensecal, and does 'c**k a snoop' at the traditional art world.
being a big collector of jimmy's stuff, and buying some stuff from ebay, it's interesting to note that a lot of his stuff is not that sought after (even those that only sold a few copies before being culled) whereas the popular ones also sold loads (e.g the terror aware queens, the postal riot poster). so approx it seems that the ones that sold well were the ones that people like the most and still want most, and therefore still sell well on the secondary market.

Once Cauty's stuff will sell strongly - the 'IT' crowd (or should I say 'the pretenders' will swoop.

Should POW undertake a print cull? , by sputnikeye on Nov 7, 2006 12:15:11 GMT 1, I've got, and had, quite a lot of Cauty's stuff and have sold a few pieces on obey ebay. I do really like his stuff and there is a small thriving market and I do really like what he is doing. I, however really like the lithograph as an art form and POW has done justice to that buy making the art affordable and within reach. The Banksy stuff has gone a bit nuts but it's also a great feeling to have backed a winning horse. The attention he's bringing to the site can only push some of the other artists to the forefront and, like a good record lable, attract others.

I know this thread is in the wrong the place But I can't find head nor tail around here and it's getting like an ol' C:B radio. Enjoy ;D

I still think that next year they should do something similar with banksy. Then people can buy it at less than £50 if they like it and want to hang it on their wall, and everyone can get one!
win-win

Should POW undertake a print cull? , by rickyc on Nov 7, 2006 12:57:45 GMT 1, Yyyyo,
Does anyone have the 321 Bomber Bunny framed (combined), or framed individually - that they can post a pic of?
Also the definitive blue/red or gray, does anyone have a pic of them framed?
I have to say, I've seen the name Cauty floating about this forum, but never paid that much attention. I love some of the work he's got!
Damn this print addiction of mine.
I need a pay rise (or to start prostituting myself off)...
