POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by Michael Jacob on Nov 27, 2006 15:22:26 GMT 1, They also announced Santas Ghetto is very near. Most importantly though, they mentioned future Banksy prints will be sold via a lottery!
I only want one! I guess I can at least focus on Christmas now, and now refreshing my POW page every 2 minutes!

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by Curley on Nov 27, 2006 18:19:58 GMT 1, I'm still not sure that a lottery is the way to go but they may prove me wrong. I hope they can make scam proof as i think the scalpers will have an absolute field day. I think it will be too easy to gain multiple entries.

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by Run Pig Run on Nov 27, 2006 19:18:00 GMT 1, surely it's names and addresses in a hat first 150 out the hat get the choice whether to buy a signed print the next 500 geta choice whether or not to buy an unsigned.........can't really see how this ensures real fans get the prints. I reckon they should just release 25 at a time willy nilly online over the next year and at santas ghetto. ......oh, who knows. not me.

I've never won a lottery or a contest all my life, so I guess knowing my sh|tty luck, Applause would probably be the last print that I buy from POW Not sure how a lottery system would work better either. How would they ensure that each person only gets 1 entry, when it's so easy to get alternate email addresses for free? And how could they possibly tell from an email address if the entrant is a carpet bagger? There's absolutely no way, simply because the internet offers such anonymity! I think the number of people trying would probably go up dramatically... at least before, not everyone could be bothered with refreshing obsessively, and the server madness might have been a deterrent for many (not anyone can try patiently for 5 hours with no guarantee for success). Now, all it takes is a simple effortless entry, and you stand a chance to get one. If our chances were 1 in 5,000 before, it's gonna go up to 1 in 50,000 or something.
Better solution logistically, sure... but is it a better solution on the whole? I dunno.

I agree. It's a shame. I think that the world and his wife (and friend, and family) would enter the lottery on the basis that if they were chosen, they'd make a quick buck.
I'm slowly resigning myself to the thought that I won't get my grubby mitts on another.

Ah, unfortunately, that's not so clear-cut anymore. Just because you're a new POW customer doesn't necessarily mean that you're a carpet bagger. Likewise, just because you're an old 'loyal' customer doesn't necessarily mean that you're not a carpet bagger either. So unless POW does something ridiculous like interview everybody personally, there's just no way to correlate customer loyalty with purchase history
Besides, if they keep their client base to the older, more 'loyal' customers, then all future stuff would never go to anyone else. Which would also be unfair.
I still think a virtual queue would make things a lot better. Just like if were were buying prints in person, we form a line, and the earlier you get there, the better your chances. And once the line is formed, nobody can dispute their place in there. I'm sure there's a way to do emulate that virtually (without the items in their basket mysteriously evaporating during checkout!!). Not the perfect solution still, but I think that's the best we can do, given all the constraints... and the best possible balance between logistics, fairness, and restricting valuable opportunities to people who don't necessarily want nor deserve them.
Ha ha ha!!! ;D I'll refund your 4 minutes back in exchange for a print What's it gonna be, your prints or your youth? ;D ;D ;D

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by BK83 on Nov 27, 2006 20:23:24 GMT 1, I have to agree with AB here -- surely there must be some sort of virtual queue technology out there -- where is our resident techy GpH? he usually has this sort of useful info ....
I am curious as to this intricate idea of a lottery they have -- im sure the are aware of the possibility of multiple entries -- maybe it will have something to do with IP adresses that the entries come from? that way you could only send one entry per computer?
any other thoughts?

Still not fool-proof. In my housefold alone, I have access to 5 different computers, each with their own static IP. If I want to go to the trouble, I can also call up my friends and family from all over.
The best solution would obviously be the one with the least loopholes possible, which I think the virtual queue would serve. In fact, a simple tweak to extend the basket time-out period would have worked wonders - people would go in, check out, and leave. Instead, what we had last week was people going in, checking out, DRAT MY BASKET IS EMPTY!, going in, checking out, DRAT MY BASKET IS EMPTY!, and so on.... so the number of people trying to access the site actually bottlenecked and piled up dramatically as time went by, as more and more people went into that DRAT MY BASKET IS EMPTY! cycle. It's no wonder the server keeled over at the end!
Ahhh whatever, if POW wanted to listen to our suggestions, they would have already done so by now. They've already made up their minds, it seems... so it's all generally moot from hereon.

He does sell canvasses @ ยฃ400 a go. ( see www.eelus.com ) Depending on your budget I'd say they were a much better bet.

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by bonesy on Nov 27, 2006 21:57:19 GMT 1, Overall Im not happy with this news- There will be 10's of thousands of entries. Just dont send out the heads up email. If you are die hard and online checking their site constantly you're worthy. This is going to be seen as basically a free entry lottery to win money. The info will be on Hypebeast, Highsnobiety and all those types of websites. Ill guess now that 50% of each run ends up on ebay within 6 months.
I just hope they take credit card numbers and address's at the time of registration to help avoid multiple entries. Even that wont totally help but its better than just taking email address's.

A worldwide graffiti campaign giving cryptic clues on how to obtain one of the new Banksys. Solve the puzzle and you gain the option to buy a print.
Completely unworkable, but it would be fun and would favour genuine fans!

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by jp on Nov 28, 2006 10:15:53 GMT 1, There has to be a better solution than a lottery. I think that POW should sell half of each remaining print on their web site (with some minor tweaks like more bandwidth and longer shopping cart timeout setting) and then have Laz sell the other half of each print at full market price. This way, if you miss out on a print you can buy from Laz (if you can swing the cash) and get full provenance rather than feed the Ebay cycle of sellers out for a quick profit. I know that if I missed a print, I would feel a lot more comfortable and be willing to pay a premium to get it from Laz over someone I don't know on Ebay. Plus this would force ebay sellers to compete with the source (Banksy's dealer) at a higher price point.
Either that or attach one of those exploding ink cartridges to each print which reads "will activate and destroy print if sold on Ebay within 90 days of purchase" ;D

I like the ink cartridge idea ;D However the other bit would still bugger POWs servers as there will be the same amount or more of people trying for fewer prints, and a lot of those who don't get them that way won't be able to afford the completely stupid money that constitutes "full market price" these days.
It's a fact that a lot of businesses networks route all their outgoing traffic through the same external IP address, and individual terminals only have their own identity on a local/intranet system. Example: If I post a message to this board from my work PC, and a bloke at the other end of the building posts one from his work PC, the IP addies would show up to the Board Admin as being identical, even tho me and blokey at the other end of the building may not be aware of each other's existence.
I'm crap at thinking up my own ideas, but great at picking other people's to pieces

POW just announced no LA prints till next year, by corblimeylimey on Nov 28, 2006 12:24:10 GMT 1, Overall Im not happy with this news- There will be 10's of thousands of entries.
If too many go to people who don't want them, people who only want to sell on ebay for a quick profit, surely a flood on ebay (say 5 times more than Applause) would cause an over supply and therefore keep the prices low hopefully.
