Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by The Jokers Puppet on Oct 23, 2017 13:40:51 GMT 1, Lucky you. Japan is one of the best places to be stuck for 2 weeks. Still holding on to its identity. The first time you go you will be captivated even by the vending machines and what's available to buy! A couple of things to consider off the top of my head (but may come back with others);
-if you like sushi, go to Tsukiji fish market. If you go very early you can watch the tuna being auctioned which is amazing fun. Eating fish at 6=7am in the morning may seem odd but if you are jet lagged its probably the right time of day! - there is a restaurant called ishikawa which is pricey but an experience. Hard to find -gallery wise, you must visit Hara Museum of Contemporary arts. There is also Vanilla Gallery and 3331 Arts Chijoda. - if you are going in November (12-26) there will be a Sumo tournament which again is worth going to. Seats are a little uncomfortable. Better to sit further back; I was treated to a ring side view - unfortunately I saw more ring than I wanted when some Yokozuna fell on me. -if you like gadgets go to Akahabara -they test sell the latest tech some of which never makes it to general sale. Its also full of comic book shops, gaming shops etc -I will look up where I bought my art from and post the name of the shops. There are lots of small places selling art in Tokyo and Kyoto. You can also buy the famous Japanese wood cut pieces.

It seems Invader, Murakami and Kaws are big in Japan. Any other artists of the ones that are usually mention on this forum that is popular over there?

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by tonys on May 22, 2018 17:14:26 GMT 1, A seasoned visitor to Japan and I too am off there in June. Murakami is popular, but the larger galleries tend to hand over their entire space to a specific show/artist.
Kusama has a show on in Kyoto at a gallery I've personally not been and she has a dedicated gallery in Tokyo now, but I think you have to book and it's sold out until August last time I looked.

Will definitely try to get to those islands if I get the chance. I reckon itโs only ferry to there? Or car-tunnel?

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by mmmike on Jul 17, 2018 2:52:02 GMT 1, Hi there I'm going to get a chance to go to Tokyo for 4 days coming up with no plans. Hoping someone can offer some advice on places to go and ideally places to get good vegan food.
I'd like to check out the place that has the Murakami prints. As well there was a store that sold Mark Gonzales stuff. I can't remember the name though. (can you tell I have no clue)
Any advice would be appreciated.

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by wottagunn on Jul 17, 2018 3:15:41 GMT 1, Stay in Shinjuku. A lot going on there both in terms of places to see (Piss Alley for instance) and heaps of restaurants/bars etc around. Golden Gai is located there also. but with any area of Tokyo (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Akihabara...) travel is very easy.

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by jtk on Jul 17, 2018 9:37:53 GMT 1, Agree w/ Wottagunn about staying in Shinjuku; its a great central location. Golden Gai is a fun place to go at night for a drink. Albatross is one of the more foreigner-friendly bars in that area. There's also a great jazz bar across the street from Golden Gai called "Dug," which is a favorite spot of the other famous Murakami (Haruki).
After German we caught a bus to Shinjuku and went to an underground bar called DUG behind the Kinokuniya bookshop. We each started with two vodka and tonics. โI come here once in a whileโ, she said. โThey donโt make you feel embarrassed to be drinking in the afternoon.โ โ Norwegian Wood
Yoyogi Park is great, especially on a Sunday. The main entrance is at Harajuku station, and there's also plenty to see in Harajuku.
Don't go to McDonalds! There are too many affordable food options that aren't Western-based fast food. You just need to be a bit adventurous! If you stay in Shinjuku, check out the basement-level of the Takashimaya department store for a huge variety of affordable food choices (and probably some vegan options). You have to take the food to go, but there are plenty of places just outside the main level to eat. Also, believe it or not, you can find some decent food options (fresh salads, etc.) at the convenience stores (Lawsons, Circle K, 7-11).
Have a great time! It's my favorite city! DM if you have any questions.

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by yatyat on Jul 17, 2018 19:29:26 GMT 1, It is extremely difficult to find vegetarian food/restaurants in Japan, I think most Japanese doesnโt know what vegan really means. Fortunately, Japanese people are usually very helpful, however, most cannot speak fluent English. My suggestion is Google Translate, just in case if you canโt find any restaurants, you can use it to explain in detail your requirements of food, e.g. egg-free, meat-free and seafood-free, to servers of non-vegan restaurants, they may be willing to prepare some vegan food which is out of the menu for you, e.g. mixed vegetable tempura with soba in soup. Have a good trip!

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by rogerwu99 on Jul 17, 2018 19:39:18 GMT 1, Was just over there. I think it may be hard to stay vegan as many things have some type of fish or pork in / on them, even if they are not visible. Haven't had time to do a proper write up, but my top tips: - Get Pocket WiFi for ~$10 / day (I lived on Google Maps and would have destroyed any data limits imposed by US Carriers) - Bring Cash (not many local places take credit cards) - Public Toilets / Vending Machines are awesome - Get a PASMO card, will make Tokyo subway and some vending much faster and easier Shopping Wise: You'll find lots of stores but here's some interesting ones: - Roppongi Arts and Design: Kusama, Kaws, and Murakami Prints & Editions here - Daiso (many locations): the Japanese dollar store - you'd be surprised what you can get for 100 yen - Kappabashi Street Food Stores: Everyone asked me to bring back fake food - Don Quijote: 24 hour place where you can get all the souvenirs you need (including Japanese KitKat) Cool Art / Museum: - Mori Digital Art in Odaiba: You need a reservation and its about $30 but a pretty cool digital, art, technology experience - Tokyo Trick Art Museum in Odaiba: Also a fun 30 minute museum for $10 admission - NTT Intercommuncation Center in Shinjuku: a little known technology, art showcase, free (go on weekdays so you can experience the haptic exhibit, mind blowing) - Metropolitan Building in Shinjuku: Free Observation deck - Watarium Museum in Harajuku: Current exhibit in Warhol, Haring, Yoko Ono, Great gift shop, about $10 If you make it to Kyoto: Gion Museum has a great new Kusama exhibit, $15

Have a good trip! This is all pretty spot on. I just want to add that usually when you want to order food etc you generally just point at a menu item and that's what you get. Here, and a lot of other countries ive been, a restaurant menu is mainly just words, but in Japan everything has a picture thankfully. Makes it quite easy. It's also not uncommon to find plastic models of food dishes outside store windows, so you know what to expect before you even enter.

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Rock it Dont Stop it on Jul 18, 2018 3:16:10 GMT 1, While it might be difficult to find vegan/vegetarian food in Japan, it has gotten a lot better to find vegan/vegetarian food in Tokyo. I was there this past November and here are my recommendations for food:
*Ain Soph Ripple - vegan burgers and burrito bowls. More for a quick stop/lunch but super good and a must. *Ainsoph Journey Shinjuku - nicer version of place above offering a more sit-down dinner option. *Tโs Tantan - vegan ramen place in Tokyo Station. An absolute must! *Veganic To Go - vegan burgers and brown rice bowls. Also more for a quick stop/lunch. *RESTAURANT 8ablish (or โEightablishโ) - vegan sit-down dinner spot. Was pretty damn good. *Cori Vegan Foodstand - small vegan comfort food spot in an outdoor food hall (Commune 246 food hall) with various other eateries. *Brown Rice Cafe - vegan authentic Japanese dishes. Also a must. I believe they are only open for lunch/early dinner.
I also 100% back the pocket WiFi suggestion. Order and reserve in advance, and you can have them ship the hotspot to your hotel. It will be waiting for you when you check in. We got the "Premium Wi-Fi" and it worked great: japan-wireless.com/product
I also also 100% back the Roppongi Arts and Design store (especially for Murakami prints and collectables at a cheaper Japanese/non-imported price) and the Watarium Museum store.
Have fun!

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by mmmike on Jul 18, 2018 4:25:32 GMT 1, Thanks everyone. That all helps a lot. Yes it seems like I should stick to the vegan spots for food. just to keep it simple. I will definitely try to make it to Roppongi Art and Design store. I only have 3 days there so I figure I won't see nearly everything but I'll try to get in as much as possible.

And check out Nakano Broadway if you are interested in classic toys. Great place. And you find Murakami's Hidaro Zingari Gallery and art cafe there.

There is also a Medicom store in the Tokyo Skytree, and one of the larger malls in Harajuku (opposite Maison Margiela if my memory is correct).
I also really enjoyed the Hara Museum when we were last out there.
