New Ben Eine release , by Monsieur2T on Jan 23, 2020 18:24:31 GMT 1, Interesting edition (besides the art itself) based on the very limited number and affordable price. Can somebody just enlighten me on the difference between a AP (Artist Proof) and a PP (Printer Proof). Just wondering. Thanks. T.

New Ben Eine release , by Happy Shopper on Jan 23, 2020 18:29:35 GMT 1, Why should identical PPs and APs be different prices? It's just 2 small letters written on them!!
Good prices though, if you like Eine.

Yes, I can read. But thereโs no difference between APs and PPs. Itโs just a ridiculous way of adding more prints (and prices) to an edition.

New Ben Eine release , by kwatis on Jan 23, 2020 22:57:57 GMT 1, The AP are from series of 7x The PP are from series of 3xย Yes, I can read. But thereโs no difference between APs and PPs. Itโs just a ridiculous way of adding more prints (and prices) to an edition. A/P's and P/P's are a carry over from traditional printing/editioning, mostly associated with lithography, intaglio and relief. It used to be that when an edition was being proofed, the various stages would be executed until the artist selected the end result that was to their liking. This print was marked B.A.T. standing for bon a tier (good to pull). All prints coming before were designated as printers proofs . All subsequent prints were compared to this print. If the looked identical they became part of the numbered edition. If they didn't, the were torn up. The artist was given a portion of the edition (to sell) as payment for his work. Today, though artists get paid for their editions, the tradition of the โartistโs proofโ has persisted and a certain number of impressions are put aside for the artist to do with as he will. Artistโs proofs are annotated as such or as A.P., or Epreuve dโartiste or E.A.

New Ben Eine release , by Riotcops on Jan 24, 2020 3:57:34 GMT 1, The AP are from series of 7x The PP are from series of 3x Yes, I can read. But thereโs no difference between APs and PPs. Itโs just a ridiculous way of adding more prints (and prices) to an edition. The weirdest part of it all is there's no edition, says they're only selling AP's and PP's. My understanding is PP's are first runs to test and gifted to every member of the print team - they should not be sold. The AP's were given to the artist to ensure quality and sign off to give the go ahead with the printing. Thus AP's are often considered more valuable to collectors as they are directly linked to the artist and a piece that they were hands on with. These are sometimes sold or the artist does as they wish with them.

So the lettering and numbering is totally arbitrary. 10 identical prints in front of him... 7 of these, 3 of these... and price the 3 slightly higher

They do indeed handle a smaller batch (say 50) and don't inspect the full batch of 500 as closely. Obviously every artist and situation is different. I personally value AP's higher as its a smaller or rarer edition but understand others don't.
