Gallery Fakes, by Riotcops on Feb 3, 2020 20:09:07 GMT 1, Curious if anyone has any horror stories, called out galleries for selling fakes etc and what happened next?
I have been after a print for 1.5 years (losing out at two auctions) and finally sourced one at the low end price on the spectrum (still a decent chunk of change) from a gallery in Italy. There were a few red flags with the print (outside edition, signature iffy, placement of # and signature compared to others). I questioned and received limited responses, provenance was decent from a wealthy families private collection and they had an invoice from another gallery in 2013.
Anyways, I went with my gut and contacted whoever I could to get in touch with the artist for authentication. I heard back today after a week of back and fourths it is indeed a fake and I was advised not to buy it. Awaiting a response from the gallery to hear what they have to say, I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now and assume they didn't know. I will keep my eye and see if the works is still offered and will publish all names, Galleries and the print in question shortly if I feel necessary.
Anyone else?

Gallery Fakes, by LJCal on Feb 3, 2020 22:05:18 GMT 1, I can name and shame 3 or 4 fairly well known galleries who sell fakes to gullible punters. Pretty much everything being sold on Etsy is fake, it shocks me just how brazen certain galleries are.

Just check out their sites and itโs pretty plain they should all be avoided.

I think if youโre chasing value thereโs always a risk youโll get caught with a fake especially when youโre learning, some lessons are harder than others unfortunately. PayPal is a good safety net for buyers and one I use quite a bit if there is an element of risk, paying the 3% fees is good insurance.

Gallery Fakes, by Riotcops on Feb 7, 2020 6:34:58 GMT 1, Well, I emailed and informed the gallery I wouldn't be purchasing the work (as both the publisher and the artists studio confirmed it was fake) and I received quite the response...
"I don't like wasting time with fakes like you and I don't have to explain anything to you if I don't want to. My skills have been clear for many years, it's you who never told me what you do, who you are and what skills you have. Finally, I remind you that the charge of fraud is punishable all over the world. Don't waste any more time otherwise I will be forced to report you too to the police."
The irony of calling me 'fake' and threatening to contact the police when he is committing a crime is just too much haha

I know too. More of that. Itโs easy if you see some โ Dismaland โ or โ GDP โ or WOH keywords or items, they are fake.

Gallery Fakes, by Riotcops on Feb 7, 2020 18:06:53 GMT 1, Emailed me again saying if the publisher or artist doesn't contact him directly he's calling the police on me ha. What business behaves like this? If he was unaware of the fake I'd expect an apology (or a thank you even) if he is aware, not sure what calling the police will do...I'm so confused by this nut job.

Well, fortunately, the publisher/studio have confirmed they are contacting the gallery.

It's my biggest fear as I'm sure it is for most collectors. And from galleries too. Not on. They should be reported to police and closed down.

Gallery Fakes, by moron on Feb 17, 2020 14:13:56 GMT 1, There have been allegations that Brandler sells fakes.
Peter Nahum of Antiques Roadshow expert and also ex Sotheby's head of some art department or other bought fakes by Myat and Drew and re sold them through Christies. there have been some allegations or rumours that some of his pre raphaelite drawings finds were dodgy.
Allegations against Feigen in New York and also regarding someone who found a very good european master painting that contacted Feigen for expertise where the finder was told to send Feigen a 10 x 8 transparency of the painting. Who was advised not to do so by a collector who alledged that Feigen would have an exact copy painted and have that authenticated and the real painting by the nobody who foun dit would never be authenticated.
Wildenstein and the dozen fake Gauguins that were added to the Wildenstein produced catalogue Raisonne. That alledgedly Wildenstein owned the dozen fake Gauguins.
I would add the allegation that Connor Brothers and their gallery are pirating images and re selling them with some added text to gullible buyers who beleive that this type of copyright infringment is OK because "it's art" and an investment.
Money money money it's a rich mans world.
can you see a pattern emerging?
