Why doesn’t JR get more discussion?, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 8, 2020 20:33:36 GMT 1, What is it about JR that doesn’t get more attention or ‘hype’ if you want to call it that.
His pieces are monumental in scale and quite thoughtful and powerful. Touches on major topics (guns, immigration, etc) but represents diverse sides to it all. His current prison project is intriguing to say the least. Plus the majority are visually stunning I’d that’s really all you care about.
Personally I think he’s at the top of the game but it seems like so little attention from many in these parts and I’m wondering the reasons some may have...

Maybe because he is more of a performance artist and his editions are just a documentation of the performance rather than works of aesthetically pleasing wall art. This forum generally doesn't discuss art and ideas in general so it's not a huge surprise.

Why doesn’t JR get more discussion?, by Matt on Feb 8, 2020 22:11:51 GMT 1, Agrée that his works are mostly a documentation, and that the « art » happens outside of the paper.
That doesn’t make them any less aesthetically pleasing though, and his choice of printing techniques shows that some thought goes into producing these beyond the simple « souvenir photo » (in which case these would probably all be c-types)
His collectors are also a different breed than most people on here. Very little of his stuff comes up for sale. Good originals are incredibly rare (and f’n expensive too...)
His JR Murals app is simply brilliant

I think this is spot on.
I do understand the ‘documentation’ idea and that the work is actually so much more outside the paper. But I agree he takes so much thought in the presentation of this documentation that I don’t think simply calling it that is fair. Similar to how actors create art when acting and then the movie isn’t just documentation of that or a fashion model posing and a photographers incredible shot being a true masterpiece.
That’s why I find JRs work so brilliant. The layers and layers of the art is brilliant and very few of any can rival it at the moment.

He’s pretty much had NYC eating out of the palm of his hand for 8 years now, with steady press. His projects are geared towards press and he has great pr, I see placements regularly in many mainstream publications. He seems the bon vivant I’d say he’s definitely not overlooked. If anything people here who follow art / street art have many sources for info and discussion, maybe he’s just overlooked here, although I’ve seen much JR chatter here over the years.

Why doesn’t JR get more discussion?, by Alban Google on Feb 22, 2020 19:40:52 GMT 1, I’ve collecting a lot from him. Went to a gallery in Paris a few months ago, met a collector from him who used to be in Banksy and Invader.
Some of his work will be on sale tomorrow at the Urban Art of Arcurial sale, I’ll be there, I will tell you how it goes.
In my opinion he’s still not really known from the mass public, which could maybe come one day. In Paris at least, people know him a lot since he has done the Louvre project twice and also the Panthéon.

Why doesn’t JR get more discussion?, by jimmyjam on Feb 22, 2020 22:51:26 GMT 1, There is no question JR is a great person, does fantastic charity work and puts up beautiful murals. He actually gets a TON of attention in the US and in Europe. Covers of magazines and a lot of celebrity shoots for major magazines at award parties.
I went to his PACE show in the Bay Area, which happens to be an area where a lot of people collect photography - tech world, yet towards the end of the show there was a lot of his work still available. I was surprised to see how many pieces they were still offering. I personally thought the cut outs are tacky and I honestly don’t think his photography alone is that strong.
His murals in public are beautiful but somewhere it loses it meaning and beauty in a gallery or in his prints. I hope time rewards those who purchase his work but I just can’t see right now people buying up his pieces. Photography is a whole other beast when it comes to collecting and there are ton of really great photographers to collect before JR. Again JR does some amazing things for art and people so I do hope the future rewards him well.

Why doesn’t JR get more discussion?, by Alban Google on Feb 24, 2020 4:57:40 GMT 1, Lot of JR were sold yesterday at the Urban Art sell.
The lithography Holy Tryptich went for 8175€ (included 25% fees) Ladj Ly went for 7600€ (included 25% fees).
And new world record for his piece « Delivery in Monrovia, Liberia » sold for 101 400€ (included 25% fees).
Not his best piece in my opinion so we could see more records breaking from JR on the next months/years.

Was a huge result for JR.
Holy Triptych and Ladj Ly had very high offers even before the bidding started, the classic JRs are increasingly hard and expensive to source.
I find it amazing that “up here down there” which is hand pasted and hand finished gets less attention than some of his recent small releases which auctioned for more than you can still buy them direct...

They have a ton of prints still available on social animals and other sites for original price. Buy them all up and auction them
Sellers and buyers fees bring the actual price down a bit but good for JR.
The original is not that off the prices pace was asking for some. Pace asking prices were world records for him as well.

He makes big photos thats all I know. I think he started out doing paste ups.
He did big photos of womens faces pasted onto shanty town type huts in Africa not long ago and got a lot of PR for that.
How much did he pay the women who posed for the photos ?
